Ways that turbos fail.

I am curious of all the ways our turbos can fail or give sufficient reason to replace. I know the seals can fail and cause smoking issues, particularly on startup. I also know the wastegates can either fail to close or can rattle (both of which are quite noisy, correct?) I've read of excessive shaft end play and of broken compressor/turbine wheels. What are the symptoms besides terrible noise and no boost? I ask all this because I am working on a 30FF code and someone claimed they had failed turbos with the same symptoms (slow to build, always 2-3 psi below target, regardless if target is 8 or 15) but I have a hard time believing my turbos would be bad yet making no abnormal whines, rattles, or smoking. Both wg actuators hold 20in vacuum indefinitely and the rod moves freely.

The wastegate rattle leads me to believe that the wastegates weren't fully closing in your case, which makes perfect sense.

I'm trying to figure out my 30ff also but I haven't started on any tests or replaced tubing yet. I was going to order the braided tubing from BMW but it $70 seemed like too much for a couple metres. ECStuning website is down and i'm still trying to figure out which lines to replace, how, and with what replacement tubing.

High Performance Silicone Vacuum Hose - 10 feet - .1375" ID (3.5mm) - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009PYDR6G..._q2xmwbEC65K7W

It will be enough for all the passenger side lines plus the two behind the oil filter. It isn't really hard, just time consuming and restricted space.

check for boost leaks...

might have a block cat... disconnect your downpipes... and give it a test run.
