How important is the age of a car?
My car is a March '07 and there may be the opportunity of getting another Porsche but it's a 56 plate. I'm not bothered about what the age on the plate says, more about going 'backwards' to an older car. Having a bit of a mental block about it as it's taken a good few years to get to the stage of no MOT's. If I bought this car, then I would have to keep it so would be back to MOT's.
Lets just say for now that it's a 997, one owner, full Porsche service history and is being sold by the OPC that originally sold the car from new. It would come with the minimum of a one years full Porsche warranty. I know I'm being conservative, but what do you lot think please? |

Go for it.
I too am thinking my car is now old considering its coming upto 2 years old next month. But I would go back to a 56 for another car though for sure. Get private plate.

So much depends on the condition/paintwork/mileage/history. If it's a great example of a 997, I'd consider it. Get yourself a personal plate (if you haven't already) and you won't be reminded about the age every time you look at it.

I was tempted to use the age of a woman analogy (ride comfort/previous owners etc.) but thought better of it (for fear of a slap). Looks like Carlos and I had the same idea about plates!

Experienced is sooooooo much better
Don't see the problem with MOTs myself?? So long as you properly maintain your car throughout the the year, do what is needed when needed MOTs are rarely expensive (unless you had anticipated it to be) or unexpected stuff Why would you want a private plate just to "hide" a cars age??

No worries Ed, I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear that I would have come back with a suitable reply. I'm very naive for my age.
It's not the fact that the number plate would say '56 - wouldn't bother me. It's the actual age of the car if that makes sense. I may go and see it tomorrow as I can see and drive it anytime I would like to. Been confirmed verbally that it's done 11k and been well looked after inside and out by it's one owner. Pictures are good tbh and it's well specced. |

I don't get it, no but then again I wouldn't as I prefer old cars.
New is boring, get yourself a Pre-SC (somehow think that won't work??) 997, is lovely though, loadsa fun, fantastically capable car. Wish I wasn't so poor that I'm happy with a bloody Toyota very jealous but have fun and enjoy

http://www.cfit.gov.uk/docs/2001/sco...cot0122/02.htm I don't think that age related wear and tear is an issue on cars under 4 years old. A 56 plate car with 11k miles has barely been run in. To all intents and purposes it will be 'as new'. |

Probably not what you want to hear but I would prefer a Cayman S over a 997 or 997s as my everyday drive.
Costs nothing to go and have a look at the car so if it's for you why not. With one yr's warrently it gives you plenty of time to see if you have a good car. My only worry is a 997 could be expensive down the line e.g. if the PASM suspension or similar needs to be replaced. I would ask them about extented warrenty and what it covers so that you have a feel of cost of ownership in the future.

At 20, I was "ripping about" (not) in a Ford Capri 2.0GL, and thinking it was the dogs ! So, as you say, Porscha aint doing too bad in a Toyota !! As for your current "predicament" (life`s so hard.....), the age wouldn`t bother me a jot. In fact, I came backwards in age to buy my E92, as it was just what I wanted and had been babied. Your prospective purchase sounds much the same, and as others have said, you shouldn`t let the age of it stop you, as it sounds a great buy !

Do it, just slap a PP on it, as has been said, and keep renewing your Porsche warranty. I will be doing the same when the warranty runs out on the RS next year.
Is Hoops car not any good for you, or do you want to go through a porsche centre for px etc? Oh and come on and spill the beans, what model is it? And regarding the Cayman vs 997 comments, the Cayman is probably the better drive due to its mid engine layout, but at the end of the day, its not a 997, and that would always be at the back of my mind, and driven properly the 997 is a joy. I want a bloody Porsche!, of the rear engined variety!

I'm confused.
In my experience, women buy first then worry about it, not the other way around.

I, on the other hand buy first, have fun and well, don't worry about it, you'll always find the money for whatever from somewhere! Seems us two E90Post girls are polar opposites with whether or not to use our brains when buying something

Agree on the mid-engined layout although I have driven 3 different 997 models upto press and again I agree the Cayman has the superior grip and the edge on overall handling but the 997 does feel that bit more sophisticated.
As for the warranty issue Peter - no worries there, hence I said minimum of one years full Porsche warranty. I would haggle for whatever and have no qualms about walking away if I wasn't getting the deal I would like. I still like the Cayman very much. Put it this way Oli - Steve's is normally aspirated. Thanks for the comments so far everyone. |

Turbo then eh?? bloody fantastic, the 997 turbo is probably the best all round car on sale today, unless you mean GT2............
I've taken a 996 Turbo round Thruxton and that is a very capable car, but never driven the 997 turbo variety, word on the street is it is awesome, and a baragain at the moment, Be quick though as prices are firming up nicely, and the bargains are running out. I'm off to the Porsche used website to find the car you are on about now.. Go on give us more details
