can I R&R my airbag myself?
Hi all
my heated steering wheel is being flaky even after charging the battery - it seems to consistently fail on cold mornings. I was going to try replacing the module as described here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...=195506&page=2 however before I dug right in I wanted to ask, how does one remove the airbag from the steering wheel? (sport wheel if it makes a difference.) If I do that will I have a persistent light that needs to be reset by the dealership? I was hoping to be able to do it myself because I would like to try to refinish the wheel trim at the same time if I can find a used piece of trim, either spray it matte black, plasti-dip it or maybe wrap it. Hate that peely rubbery stuff! thanks much! |

sweet. so no persistent codes? I'm OK with that! thanks for the how to!
I love it when a fix is inexpensive... the part is apparently reasonably priced according to Tischer. |

oh it totally tells me what I need to know. I already have the instructions for replacing the heated wheel module and according to them once I get the airbag and trim off I'm there - I don't even have to actually remove the steering wheel so long as I can get the trim off and it looks like I can. So I just needed to know how to release the airbag.

I could be wrong but I think there is a bulletin on this
It had something to do with heated seats ,wheel and cabin heat all on same time and something going off?

Yup that is what prompted this... my heated wheel cuts off and the fix is apparently replacing the module in the wheel. Link to thread in 1st post...
Now the question... I took a look at the car as I should have part tomorrow. I thought this would be easy but I don't see where I'm supposed to stick my screwdriver to release the airbag...? |

There are two invisible holes, you can just barley feel them, you actually have to break through the material with the two small tools (screwdrivers) to release it. Back of the steering wheel, roughly at 8 and 4 o'clock.

Got it done today. the connections on the airbag were fighting me, but I just didn't bother disconnecting them, was able to just move the airbag out of the way and replace the module without even removing the trim... I love it when a job is easy!
