Strange question.
Can't decide whether to have a chirp with the alarm or not.

What do you guys think? In terms of style and theft deterrent.

I always liked them back in the 90s!! Always had Clifford alarms with my previous VWs. And had the chirp.

But hardly ever hear them now days and wonder if its tacky or is stealth better? But then I was wondering whether the chirp will make it even more obvious that I'm protected cause hardly anyone has aftermarket alarms these days??

I coded my OEM alarm to chirp. It helps me to check whether my car has locked especially with comfort access.

Hm … interesting. That's the thing. In my mind it sounds really old fashioned.

BUT I don't know if those simple minded thieves will be deterred by it.
If it does, then I guess I'll have it ON on mine.

I don't think people will start calling you old fashioned if you get the chirp..

I got the alarm chirp coded by Makkan last night.

My worry was that it was going to sound tacky, a bit clifford sounding like. But it actually sounds pretty good, not the same tone as the clifford alarm chirp.

Am I missing something here but how is an alarm chirp going to deter thieves? I doubt very much the scum that would nick your motor is likely to be stood next to you as you lock it to hear the chirp?!?!

To me, a chirping alarm is more of an annoyance to neighbours, as they're the ones who will hear it the most (after you of course). Getting home late at night and chirping away is certainly going to get on peoples tits.

Just my opinion but, unless as the above posters have said its to confirm it's locked with comfort access (I do sometimes recheck the Zed), then I think chirping is a bit pointless.

Re the comfort access comments. I would have thought it was the opposite. With comfort access I don't walk away pressing the fob button, I stand right next to the car and touch the door handle. How can I fail to notice if it doesn't lock?

You don't get alarms chirping in the UK any more because construction & use regulations prohibit it. Quite rightly too because it's fcuking annoying.

I've had the chirp on every car I've had, simple because I generally lock it as I walk away and the audible sound confirms that it is locked.

Most cars have them pre-loaded but are switched off.

Agree, with CA you watch the lock drop and see the wing repeater flash as you are standing right there with your hand on the handle when it locks.

Although even with CA I often used the fob to lock and unlock as it's quicker and I have the keys in my hand anyway.

The indicators only flash when alarm is fully set, if a door is half shut or boot bonnet ajar then indicators won't flash, so the alarm isn't set, but the car will still lock

To start with, I guess not all of you have heard BMW chrip sound. If you did, then you know its not loud like Viper or other security alarms. If you are 1.5 meters away, you can barely hear it. I doubt that your neighbour (who surely lives more than 1.5 meter) will hardly hear it, unless they live on a road.

Then, it does not help to avoid others taking your car.
However it does tell you that there is nobody jamming the signals (when you hear the buzzer) and assures you that your car is locked without looking at it.

Now it's been enabled by coding you can probably turn it off yourself. In my handbook it shows you how to configure the alarm notification in iDrive to visual only or sound & visual. It then goes on to say that sound is not available in some jurisdictions (e.g. UK). However, if you've had it made available in the first place you can probably turn in on or off in the iDrive / BC yourself.

I think the chirp *is* obnoxious... but I have mine programmed to chirp anyway, because I need the confirmation the doors are locked. If you press the lock button twice it disables the motion sensor, and I don't want that.

Let's get this straight fella.

The only way you could look less tacky than having a car alarm that talks to you is by wearing a pair of lederhosen with a flap cut in the buttocks for easy access to your arsehole, when you next go to see your best client ......

I'm leaning more towards not having it. Just wondered if it will deter the scumbags a tiny little bit.

I'm not always sure if my car is locked. I quite often look at the door, the blinking light (literally, not swearing ) or I unlock and relock it again to see if it flashes. otherwise like the above said, it would deactivate the interior sensors. Not that they are any useful.

I guess I'll leave mine quiet.

Thing is they are so old fashioned, they could be coming back.

Chirping alarms could just be the new white. Very retro!

Tried this today. Only had "visual" indications no audio No issues though Mak will uncode it
