Hyundai Unveils Genesis Coupe R-Spec

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/11/c...pe-for-enthus/

Quote:
Hyundai has been one of the few companies keeping us busy at the Chicago Auto Show. Besides showing the Rhys Millen drift car and announcing pricing for the Genesis Coupe, the automaker trotted out the R-spec enthusiast model.

While the car they brought to the show is basically a concept, the R-Spec package will be available through dealers and will give performance junkies more in some areas and less in others. The full list of equipment is in the press release after the jump, but the highlights are a 210-hp turbo'd inline-four that returns 30 mpg and a top speed of 137 mph. Available only with the six-speed manual, it comes with stability control, ABS, electronic brake force distribution, 19-inch wheels, Brembos, a Torsen limited-slip differential, a beefier suspension and summer-only Potenzas. To reduce cost and weight, the R-Spec doesn't include Bluetooth, automatic headlights, cruise control, trip computer, chrome interior accents and steering wheel audio controls. Basically, the R-spec is packing all the heavy-hitting hardware from the Track model and ditches the frippery that drivers and customizers aren't interested in.

The Genesis Coupe R-Spec will be available mid-2010 with a base price of $23,750, or $3,000 less than the 2.0T Track model. That should allow a lot of extra cash for some tuner bits. Besides the performance tweaks, the R-Spec will only be available in three colors: Karussell White, Bathurst Black and Tsukuba Red. Good names, good colors, good kit and a good price. We're sold.

Seriously, that's some sweet looking metal at a bargain price. Once you get past the brand snobbery, there's a lot to like there. If I was in the market for a sport/touring coupe, I'd give this car a long look.

I'm certain that the interior bits and road handling are not going to be as refined as Infiniti, Audi, or BMW (I'm thinking of the G37, A/S5, and E93 as its main competitors (ok, there's the Solara too )), so the real question is whether superior bits of those brands are worth the extreme price premium. It's going to be interesting for sure.

most likley they're employing the strategy used by BMW and other manufacturers: keep the product line fresh by timed-releasing new models/iterations every few years

that's a really nice car and a great price tag

What I love is how both the Turbo and V6 can take regular or premium gas.
I've looked at a few dynos and that V6 is very mod-friendly. An intake, exhaust, and premium fuel equates to about 300whp. 360hp out of a 26k car is nuts.

3.8 V6 NA Manual

Stock reg fuel

vs

intake + exhaust + premium fuel + traction off + rev limit off

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quote:
Wow! 50hp gain with just those mods. With headers it should put it to 310whp+. Can't wait for the roots supercharger to come out for it. 7-8psi will easily bump it to 400whp. And the motor is boost friendly because "piston cooling jet was added under each cylinder to reduce thermal loading."

you think 17s or 18s would fit over those brembos? big wheels aren't exactly "performance" oriented to me.

Any pics of a white one?

Great little car for the $ IMO. Throw a few bucks under the hood and I'll bet that thing is going to be a hoot to toss around.

Thumbs up for Hyundai! No wonder they're one of the very few manufacturers turning a profit right now.

Hyundai Shows Off 460 HP Prototype Supercharged Tau V8

"The 4.6 liter Tau V8 offered in the Hyundai Genesis Sedan normally cranks out 380 HP, but this prototype engine gets a screw-type roots supercharger with a novel clutched pulley, a water-to-air intercooler, and cylinder deactivation. This results in 460 HP and 435 lb-ft of torque while returning 8% better fuel economy."

http://jalopnik.com/5152215/hyundai-...charged-tau-v8

Motive did a writeup on it in September.

"September 19, 2008

It's late on Friday when the whole project finally comes together. The engine is in the car, the upgraded drivetrain components are bolted in place, and the engine fires up with a triumphant purr. The thick air intake tubes, laced together with flexible red rubber joints, wrap around the complicated intake/supercharger combo, the whole package looking more like something built by NASA, not Hyundai. The team is ecstatic, and Marcus pulls a nickel out of his pocket and leans over the engine. After a few failed attempts, he gets the nickel to stand on end with the engine running, balancing on top of the smooth-running supercharger. A job well done.

But there's a second half to this day of reckoning, and Mark Shirley returns to do the duty of driving the car outside for a few test runs. (You've maybe seen evidence of this, as an Autoblog reader with a camera caught the guy getting gas.) We couldn't go along with Mark, but he returns with an impressive 4.9-second 0-60 time with the car running a conservative 11 pounds of boost. Tests with earlier prototypes and more road returned a quarter-mile time of 13.58 seconds at 108 mph. Still, the Hyundai guys aren't satisfied. "Needs summer tires," Dan Bedore tells me. "Plus, we can't push the car hard. Breaking it at this point would be a real bummer." Indeed it would be — call us after the show, Dan."

This car is a fail.

Not because of the actual car, but because of the badge. Sadly, I don't think it's possible for Hyundai to get rid of it's image without changing it's name.

I also don't think other manufacturers are phased by anything Hyundai releases.

Well from what I've seen firsthand, they've already changed their image significantly. Now people are serious with comparing Hyundai to BMW and Lexus. There were some who did a year ago but now it's gotten common.
