Dinan should use a nice silicone hose instead of that ghetto looking home depot ducting.
Hey, that's Mike Ngo! http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...1&d=1226115357 |

The ribbed design doesn't seem very conducive to air flow, but I'm sure it's tested, quality, etc.
I met Mike at H2Oi in Ocean City, MD through my friends at 20 Squared Tuning. |

90% of the improvement comes from removing the charcoal filter and putting in a high flow air filter. The Dinan piping doesnt really buy you much. Plug it up you will be hard pressed to notice the difference.
BMW kept the closed box design for sound purposes, and to keep that choking charcoal filter. That is why cone intakes can make so much more power they get rid of the charcoal filter. Cone type intakes also have a much, much different sound. That charcoal filter just kills throttle response.

Drill a hole in you airbox and run some piping down to the outside. It ain't rocket science.
90% of the improvemnt comes from removing that coal filter though.

Then go make one and get back to us.

According to Mike Miller, Roundel, the charcoal filters are there because of NA emissions regulations. The thought is when the engine is shut down, a tiny bit of exhaust gas escapes through the intake. A service tech at my local dealer said it will not hurt the engine by removing it, but won't make a significant difference either. I dynoed my car on a Dyno Jet after install. Unfortunately I don't have a baseline dyno to compare with - my fault. My seat of the pants dyno says the car has better throttle response, and a nice smooth pull to red line. Maybe it was just a big waste of cash in the end...Oh well. I'd like to install the BMW Performance Intake, and then compare.

Much of the change I notice is on throttle response - the power change is nice but not as marked.
I can feel a significant difference taking out the charcole filter (as you noted, it is just for emissions). I can plug up the holes extra hole dremeled into the intake, but I can't feel a difference with that. From an engineering perspective, more cold air is a good thing, I just can't feel it. Maybe it would make more difference with an exhaust (its in the mail). If you plug up the Dinan CAI, do you notice a loss in power? (good looking car!)

"Dinan-like" ram air for less than 40 bucks
There are a couple of good options to cutomize the intake for cheapo bucks. I did a Dinan-like Ram Air for my 328i for less than 40 dollars. I even think its a bit more efficient than the Dinan since it doesn't share the same inlet with the brake cooling duct. Check my reply on the following post;

i planned on doing something similar to this using my M3 ducts... only i'm going to use fiberglass and make my own design. Seems like a waste though to spend $300 on it (just estimating the cost, i didn't feel like looking it up)

Isn't it extremely likely that you can do the exact same thing yourself with a few extra parts and more patience? 450 is extremely steep for a "kit"... I mean all it really is, is an adapter for the box, a hose, a new filter and a new piece for the brake duct ... was it worth it ?
I feel like id need to create my own replica of it anyways being as dinan claims it only fits for pre lci models? And I'm not sure if having an mtech bumper means I have bigger ducts or not vs. Base lci or and pre lci models either... glad you liked it though!
