Never having experienced it, can you tell me the definition of a long crank?

Is it 3 seconds? 5 seconds? 10 seconds?

Just so I know if it happens.

3-5 seconds would be considered a long crank with or without Fluxuating RPM's... (ie reving by itself between 600-1500rpms)

I have had a few long cranks already on my '11 N55. About to hit 1200 miles any day now. Been babying it, warming it up properly and rarely getting over 4k RPMs. Seems like I get them when I stop then start again quickly (like running into a gas station for beer).

Most of the time though it is normal. No other issues though. I had worse on occasion on my 4.8is though so I am not sure if I should be worried yet...

I've had long cranks on my N55 X5... But they are very random... 1 or 2 days out of the week I have a long crank (3-5 sec), and the next day it cranks normally... It's really odd. But what really sells it is the shadow codes I get that are associated with the cranks (Terry confirmed that my HPFP is throwing codes)... I have yet to go to a dealership about it, and probably won't until the cranks either happen more often, or until it's time for the mandatory 12k mile visit...

That would be infuriating for sure. The irony for me is that I got rid of my 4.8is because I was at the dealer constantly with it (actually really liked it). Keeping my fingers crossed I won't have any issues. I was on the fence about getting a '06 M3 and opted for the 335 out of the two. I am very happy with my decision overall, just hope this fuel pump thing doesn't make me regret it.

I don't think he has a n54 so you'll be fine.

I've got ~8600 miles now and haven't experienced a single problem. Nothing. Not one long crank, ever. Even after sitting in my detached, unheated garage in sub-zero temps without being started for several days, my baby fired right up without so much as a hiccup.

I just wanted to put this out there, before everyone starts freaking out and thinking the N55 is junk, or something. Those having issues are in the minority, by far.

I thought long cranks could also be the LPFP, and the software fix primed it during the door open trigger?

Could be HPFP also...but just wondering?

What is this mandatory 12k mile visit? Take you car to the dealer now. Why risk getting stuck on the road?

To those with long cranks, where do you fill up your gas? I've always filled mine at either Chevron or BP and the car runs great. The times when I MUST fill up at other places like Shell, it drives like crap. And it is not just on my 335i. My Lexus IS350 behaves the same way with Shell crap gas. Just putting it out there. 43.5k miles and not a hiccup.

You must work for Chevron. I don't notice any difference.

I'm not worried... I drive 2 miles to work everyday, If I get stuck, I'll call the dealership and have them pick up the SAV and take it to the dealership which is 3 miles from the job and 5 miles from work... IF it happens, it won't be a big deal...

Cool. I can walk and usually ride my scooter to the dealer to get parts a mile away.

What is this mandatory 12k mile visit? Never heard of it.

The regular scheduled maintenance... usually happens at 12k or so miles... or less depending on what maint schedule your yourself follow (or when the car alerts you to change your oil based off your driving habits)... I only follow it for the free oil change... otherwise I have the oil changed every 6k miles and the 12k I let the dealership handle it...

my 2008 n54 was trouble free til about 38,000 (had a JB, JB2, JB3 tune since 500 miles) when i started experiencing the long cranks, intense shuddering of the engine, reduced power modes, and sporadic RPMs. i thought that certainly it was an HPFP issue so i took it into the dealer. their diagnosis was that it had a couple of bad fuel injectors. after they replaced it, my car was fine.

some research led me to believe that i ought to start running an injector cleaner through my system every 10k miles to prevent this in the future.

in retrospect, i think this happened because when i loaned my car out a couple days before, the person ran an entire tank of 87 oct fuel through my car without telling me. the issues started occurring about 1-2 refills after the loan.

my 2 cents.

Gotcha. Just had to clairify cause some people will read what you wrote and claim more "n55" problems.
