Question 320D poor consumption - help pls.

Hi guys...my E90 320D used to do 40 MPG combined and recently the MPG got dropped to 28MPG. Upon checking the threads on this forum I have had both the EGR and Main stats changed now and also the coolent! I can see the temp going up to 89C to 91C, unfortunately my fuel consumption is still bad, I am only getting 32 MPG combined. Any ideas what else could be wrong?

Id start by cleaning out your egr valve and running some injector cleaner through it

Had a full service, including replacement breather box on my 330d, now getting 40+ mpg, at least 10% better....

Thanks Jase.

I will get my EGR valve cleaned and run injector cleaner. Before I do this, is this worth getting a full diagnostic check at BMW dealer?

As mentioned on your previous post, did you replace your fuel filter and air filter?

What about Activ8?

Why not buy yourself a cheap scan tool from ebay?

You can get ones for £15-£20 and they will do everything you need to do!

Then once you have it you can use it at your leisure. Its pretty simple

OBD will not show anything. I have one and don't get any errors but my 320D gets only ~42 MPG at ~50 mph cruising speed.

When driving around town I can only go ~350 miles on full tank.

And again - 0 errors shows in OBD.

I think 42-50mpg on a run is okay for one of these, I average 45mpg on motorway type runs, 35 round town.

If the car notices a fault it will store a fault code in the ECU which is readable via the OBDII port

If the car doesn't notice a fault it could be things such as poor maintenance, coked up EGR valve, faulty thermostat. Its always nice to scan a car first of all and then take it from there. Gives you a good idea straight away rather than 2nd guessing

Autel Maxi Scan MS309 is the one i've just bought.
(Actually bought it for my van but hoping it works on the bmw too)
£15 or so on ebay.

Hasn't arrived yet but if you give me a few days i'll let you know if it works etc.

I had a cheap one for my VW cars that worked a treat so hopefully this is the same scenario
