Hi guys.
Can anyone give me some ideas of checks to make to resolve the following problem.

When holding my 2007 320D at around 1700 revs there is an uneven hesitation where the car lurches like a lumpy old car. It's fine if I accelerate out of it and only does it when held at that rev. It even does it on cruise control.

Any ideas?

i have a hill upto my driveway i used to turn off from the road in 2nd and go up the hill in a 320i but my car i have to change down to 1st as too low revs, i never go down to 1700 revs change down if it happens

Hmm. What happens. Does the revs pick up but the car not move? If so: That could be the first sign of a worn clutch...

However if it is just flat/unresponsive but the revs don't react then I'm inclined to say that it's normal.

If you're sure the car never used to be like that: Getting air filter or MAF sensor changed could solve it...

I'd not worry, unless the revs pick up slightly but the car doesn't really move.. Like I said earlier.

In what gear does this happen?

This engine is notorious for having poor torque very low down the rev range and it likes being booted and only seems to come alive from 2500rpm onwards. I often have to drop gears at low speeds because it just seems to die at lower revs.

The car does move with the revs and did have a new clutch fitted recently. This may sound silly, but where's the air filter as I looked under the bonet yesterday and it wasn't obvious :-o

True, the power is very short lived, especialy compared to my last car that had a 3.2 litre petrol engine hat revved to 7k. The car does accelerate from really low revs though, very slowly, but from around 1200 revs it wil pull untill it gets to almost 1700 revs where it feels a bit lumpy an then carrys on unless I hold it at 1700 revs, in which case the car just judders as i'm driving it.
Seems worse in a high gear though, like 4th for example. Maybe this could seem worse as the power seems lower in a higher gear as I don't notice as much in 3rd or lower.

As the engine is mounted backwards: It is more or less under the dash - lol.. . A really difficult job...

I couldn't say if it was there before the clutch was changed as I've only had it a few weeks and they fitted a new one when I bought it as the DMF was on it's way out.

I've tested my car today at these revs an in every gear at 1700rpm at most speeds it pulls very well. It's not lumpy and it doesn't struggle to pull, in fact it was very smooth an had a nice kick.

Unless the speeds you are having trouble at are 15mph or less I doubt it's clutch related as realistically the clutch would be disengaged at this speed. Could be turbo related.....?

Hi, I used to have a similar problem with my 55 plate 525d which it turned out was the diesel particulate filter cleaning cycle. Once the car was at a certain temperature, usually once every re-fuel (normally after a 10 mile journey), the car would lurch and the exhaust note was deeper. Apparently if it didnt complete the cycle it would repeat more frequently and lurch more often. On finding this cause when it re-ocurred I would just take it on a longer run until it cleared. Its barely noticible on my newer 325d. Just posted in case its relevant to yourself.

ok, that's 2 jobs for today as the microfilter warning came up a couple of days ago too.
I'll pop down to GSF later and get a DPF & microfilter and see what happens.

Thanks for the input, I think I just experience the same issue today, it just happen once, probably it finished it's cycle and runs fine (so far) now

Either that, or maybe EGR could be a bit sticky

Hi guys, I had this exact problem on my old 2008 320d, was seriously frustrating and took a while to resolve the issue via a fair amount of diagnostic work. *We eventually cured the issue by updating all the software on the car. *Cost £80 to do this and the hesitation was gone, problem solved.

I bought another 320d yesterday and yes, you guessed it, hesitates at 1700rpm. *I'll behaving the software updated this week.

Hi I was just reading this as I have been experiencing similar problems recently - I was wondering whether a software update might be beneficial - not only for this but some other audio/bluetooth issues i was seeing.

Can I ask where did you get a software update from for £80? Sounds reasonable to me, I'm guessing this will be a rip-off from the $tealers?!

Hey guys!

I live in Sweden and drive a M series E90 touring that has the same problems you guys are talking about. If I hold it in 4th gear around 1600 - 1700 rpms and press down on the gas granne style it jerks like 3 times.. if I hit hard it takes off.

Has anyone REALLY tried something that works? I dont mind getting the car rebooted with new updates.. but it has to work.. in Sweden its costs shits loads to fix BMW's..

maybe I should look into getting it trimmed instead? Grab a few extra horses in the process..
