Yeah that is a bummer. I just upgraded from 80 to 120 amps and my $200 Schwaben tool is telling me to use Program to change the amps.

Well, mine just paid for itself again. Window lift mechanism broke the other day and just finished replacing it.

No matter what combination of button pulls or pushes would reset the closure point. Window would roll all the way up, stop and reverse half way down.

Scanned... no fault codes. Went into some of the functions and found the one for "teaching" the window. Worked like a charm... no dealer charge for diagnosing it.

How long did it take for you to repair the mechanism?

I found a new open box BMW unit on Ebay for $40... so it was basically just swap the motor. All told, less than an hour between pulling the armrest trim off and having it completely reassembled.

But I watched a couple YouTube videos and most stated that the Dorman lifting assembly was far superior to the BMW one and also far cheaper.

I will have to check. I know you could watch the 2 temperature points for the coolant. I used that function when I was driving my car to the shop to make sure I didn't over heat when I need a new water pump & thermostat after it failed once.

The other option is either the infrared thermometer or probe type that Harbor Freight has. I picked up one of the infrared units when they had it on sale and used it several times for the transmission fluid change.

Yeah, one day i'll end up with one of these...

The Carly can't do the trans/transfer case adaptions or window learning, etc., but it does seem like this along with the Carly would cover pretty much everything a home DIY'r would need or want. I do love the easy "coding" features that the Carly unit offers on your phone.

I also like how this is a self contained unit vs needing a computer with some other units.

Appreciate the informative posts, guys!

So what is everyone's experience with the Schwaben tool so far? I have Carly for iPhone and it's just OK. But I need something that will reset adaptations for my 335d diesel. I thought about getting Rheingold (ISTA?) but I'm looking for something simple and don't really want to spend that much time configuring software on a laptop to get the darn thing to work. You folks recommend Schwaben? Worthwhile?

Looks like Foxwelltool.com has it on sale for $155.

I bought the Schwaben/Foxwell tool some time ago but haven't done much with it other than check for codes. It seems pretty "friendly" for someone too lazy or intimidated to use more professional PC based software.

From what I've read it can do somewhat more than I have stumbled across with the little time I've spent with it. E.G. - I think it can read AT fluid temperature, but, no idea how to get to that if I want to do a fluid change.

Any interest in starting a thread (or just contribute to this one) where those of us that have the tool share experiences on how to use it?

Have the Foxwell version. Have not done much with it but check codes and code injectors. Also used it on Honda, Dodge and Ford for standard obd codes. Its nice to keep in the trunk.

So what would be the difference between these and Carly app in terms of diagnostics? I know coding wise there are pros and cons between them

The Scwaben/Foxwell can read OBD codes from any car and also do specific vehicle operations to BMW / Mini / Rolls.

Not sure about the Carly. But I'm not sure the Scwaben / Foxwell can do the coding that Carly can do.

Carly can read and clear codes, also can register batteries at $15 a pop. I don't think it can code injectors though

And it definitely can't reset adaptations... at least I haven't been able to find a way. I think I'm going to cave in and buy the Schwaben. The fact that I can add other car manufacturers is a nice bonus too IMO.

I had found a good list of what the Schwaben can do but for the life of me I cannot remember where and now I can't find it.
