FAO British - Could you pass the citizenship test

Following on from the Tram thread a lot of points were made about limiting immigration on a similar system to Aus.

We do have a similar points based system for entry to the UK. Details on the UKBA site. Not saying there aren't people circumventing the system - but that's down to the failings of UKBA etc.

But here's a point - could you pass the citizenship test?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/blog/qu...ship-test-quiz

I realise anyone could cram for a test and pass it, but see what you think of the questions that are indicative of being British.

Post yours scores if you so wish

Hahaha!

You scored 11 out of a possible 24

With no research whatsoever of course. But still. Shocking stuff.

Ha ha - what a joke - I scored 8 also

Officially failed the test! I don't consider my self thick, and have lived here all of my life. How on earth am I supposed to know why recruitment centres were set up in the west indies in the 1950's and what relevence that has on modern British Immigration?

I am 40, born in the 70's - I would guess that most immigrants are younger than me, prob born in the 80 and more likely 90's. Can't imagine many people, Uk citizens or not, being able to answer that question correctly!

Education?

I agree that most of the questions are irrelevant (I scored 15) but that one IS relevant I believe. The massive influx of immigrants began when we targetted the West Indians specifically to come and drive buses, which not many other people wanted to do.

It's entirely relevant to the situation we are in now because it could be argued that's how it all began.

My eduaction was obviously pretty poor then, as I can't ever remember being taught that in school - it will prob be very relevent to an older person when it might have been more current news back in their time perhaps?

i got 9, and I think the one to elevate me above 8 was the bus driving one - only because my grandad had told me once upon a time.

8 here as well.
What a crock of shit.
I'm all for a citizenship test, but how about it being current and actually testing ones ability to integrate into an existing society?
A right or wrong answer to 75% of those questions would give no indication to somebody's commitment as a citizen.
That's a history test.
Very different.

"To drive buses" sounded like the least plausible answer to me.

If you ask me most of the questions are based on useless general knowledge. I don't need to know the number of parliamentary constituencies, when women got the right to divorce their husbands or how many people up to the age of 19 live in the UK. Questions like number 3, 5, 8, 12 etc are far more important for people to know.

Precisely so - it was a seminal point in recent British history and, in my opinion, one of the very few valid questions in an extremely unrepresentative and pointless test. It's not a memory for dates or statistics that matters, but, as 'Sheps' says, more a knowledge of our customs and an ability to integrate within our society.
I scored 14, but just about all the number/date/percentage answers were pure random guesses.

Plausible or not, it's what actually happened. The British workers at the time weren't willing to drive buses for the pay being offered - not entirely unrelated to what's happening in the public sector right now. But, then again, when did anyone ever learn from history?

  • Which island off of mainland UK, produces almost entirely whiskey drinking piss heads
  • Which member or relative of the royal family has the best ass and topless pics you'd definitely knock off a sneaky one to
  • What is the big smoke
  • What the f*ck are you looking' at?
  • Why is it unfair that you should be expected to work for a living (this one is mostly aimed at labour voters)

Questions like that.

Much more indicative of a proper member of british society, imho.

I got 16 but still do not have sufficient grasp of the English language or the British way of life to enter this country.

It says much more about the peculiar people who made up the test and their own grasp on reality (tenuous at best).
