Damaged car - NCD ripoff

My wife has been driving my e92 as I took advantage of the 6 series lease offers. All was going well until at her brothers house she managed to get 2 logs wedged under the car but rather than stop she then tried to reverse! Anyway the car had to be jacked up to release the logs. Garage has just been to collect the car. Looks like new front bumper, new undertray, suspension issues and maybe more. She is not popular at the moment.

Local garage are going to provide a quote but I suspect it will have to be an insurance claim so probably take it to BMW. The annoying thing is that she has never had a claim so has something like 20 years NCD but it looks like 1 claim will reduce it to 4 years!

Waiting for the phone call to see what the damage is, literally.

Sorry to hear about this. I know that this will be of no consolation at all but that is why insurance companies offer protected NCD. Presumably you aren't protected?

If it were me I would look at the cost of the repair verses the cost of your excess + the cost of your increased premium next year. If it is just the undertray and bumper and not the suspension then you will probably find out it will be cost neutral to pay for it yourself.

Then next year make sure you get protected NCD. I agree with you though about insurance companies, rip off twats, hate them!!

On a different note, how are you getting on with the 640d? Loving mine.

I'd be surpised if there's any damage to the suspension/steering components, there fairly robust, and a log would have to be quite substantial and hit at quite some speed to do any real damage.
But garages have much better eyes than Joe Public

Max yrs of NCD with most insurance companies is 9/10Yrs,none the less a fecker to lose any!

I went to Aviva in 2006 with 17yrs NCD. When I switched this September I was at 23 yrs NCD. They wrote me a lovely letter advising of my 5 yrs NCD entitlement for my new insurer. I questioned this and they went to 12 yrs. Questioned again and they said that 12yrs was the best they could do and the max is 9+ years anyway. My wife who has only been driving for 3yrs has been awarded 7yrs by Aviva. Looks to me like they make it up on the day. They probably ask a collegue to think of a number between 1 and 10!!!!!

Protected NCD is a con as they still load your premium anyway.

Yup. I have maximum NCD, so 70% ish. I pay £700pa, so really my premium is around £2300. If I had a bump, even with protected NCD, the base premium will go up god knows how much. 70% off an inflated figure is still more than I'm paying now.

Protected NCB is a con, your paying insurance on your insurance, you still get a big hike the next year and all other companies still hammer you as you have to declare the accident.

Thanks for the replies. The damage is less (as someone pointed out it might be).
New undertray, wheel arch liner and something else that I can't remember. The headlight self levelling mechanism will apparently just pop back in. Bumper will aso be ok with no other serious damage.

I don't usually have protected NCD as over the years I have saved quite a lot in premiums.

This is my wife's insurance and Swiftcover actually sent her a refund because the website proposal only went to a maximum of 9 years NCD and when I sent in proof of NCD they noted that she had 16 years so sent us a refund!

Yes mate loving it. My wife has my 330d and i could never understand why people remapped cars but when I drive the 330 after the 640 the 3 does feel underpowered. The 6 has oodles of power and a great interior. Great motorway cruiser but obviously not so agile around country lanes. Love it.
