Water Pump vs Coolant Pump
Hey everyone,
First of all, terminology wise, are a coolant pump and water pump one in the same (I.e different terminology based on where you live)? Looking at doing standard preventative maintenance by doing the 'water pump + thermostat', however I'm unsure as to whether this is technically changing the 'coolant pump + thermostat' as I've been on BMW catalogs and seeing conflicting info. Thanks in advance. |

Yes, coolant pump and water pump should refer to the same part.
How many miles on the car? Some people recommend not changing it preventatively because it's somewhat random as to when they fail...some last upwards of 120k miles and others have failed at 25k miles. |

LOL, different names for the same things. Over here we refer to a hood as a bonnet, a trunk as a boot, a glove compartment is a cubbyhole. LOL
But yes, coolant pump and water pump as it refers to the cooling system on a car is one and the same. Check on RealOEM for the corresponding part numbers, but I agree with the above. It depends very much on the age and mileage of the car, yours being a 2007 model could do with new parts if the mileage is very high. So what's the car's mileage at the moment? And has the coolant been changed every 2 years etc? |

Oct 07' build and done 230,000 km (~142,000 miles) and bought about 30,000 km ago however I did not ask the previous owner if he had changed them over or the coolant (didn't know it was something to ask about). This has lead me to wanting to change it over before I drive to Germany in about a month along with my next service (also includes replacing the coolant so prefect timing )

At that sort of mileage, I think replacing the thermostat and coolant pump would be a good thing to do, it's only a matter of time before either one of those components will fail.
