GM patents their 7-speed DCT

Well it looks like those paddles on the new C7 Corvette will be used for something more worthy in the near future. I'm just surmising but I'd say a 7-speed dual clutch is on the way for the new C7 to keep pace with other industry front runners like BMW and Porsche.

Patent != production, companies can make money licensing their IP in addition to putting it into production. All these big companies have in house legal departments, and reward their engineers for writing invention disclosures. This isn't to say GM won't see DCT's on their cars, but there's nothing to say that they won't license them from Getrag or anyone else.

The rev match paddles on the C7 are superfluous, not to mention ugly. Hopefully GM ditches them on the MT C7 and re purpose them for the DCT. Or column mounted paddles would be a nice touch too.

I think this is why the paddles were there in the first place, rev match could have been accomplished with a switch, button or dash setting. Perhaps GM was eluding to the DCT by placing the paddles in the car? I have a feeling within a year or so either the 2015 C7 or whenever the new Z06 or ZR1 comes about you'll see it optioned with the DCT.

If they do like Porsche you'll still have the option for a true manual. But in an age where lap times matter (which I don't know why, who really races their street car) the Vette has to go DCT to stay competitive among its contemporaries.

It just seemed redundant to have two buttons on the steering wheel that do the exact same thing. I thought GM was going to offer an Auto because they were still developing a DCT, maybe they are going straight to DCT? The Vette looks like it will be fast regardless of tranny setup, it's already posting blazing numbers. All this on a tire footprint not nearly as wide as the Z06/ZR1. Just nuts.

You would think so being that it costs double what the Vette does. But its probably not reality...

Go watch that C7 vs F12 vs Carrera 4S video that's posted in here and see if you still think that. They both run right at 12 flat and 120 in the quarter and I think that Vette will scoot around the track quicker.

US is the biggest manual market. GM won't take away the manual, especially in the corvette. Just think how many people buy them now with a manual.

I agree manual will be available, but the zr1 and/z06 may be flappy paddle only, everyone wants the best numbers in the magazines

I say by the time The Z06 and ZR1 are flappy-paddle only, there will be no such thing as a standard manual anymore for any car. All Z06 and ZR1s ever made have been manuals, which can't be said about any other sports car today. Thankfully, they will delay the inevitable death of the manual for as long as possible.

When it comes to such a significant aspect of driver involvement as shifting gears, lap times can take a back seat to pleasure. I've said for a while now...driver can be removed all together and cars today will be faster on a track. GPS guided self-driving with the engine, traction, brakes, suspension, etc., all calibrated x times per second for the given weather conditions from satellite weather data will run circles around any human. Can you imagine how crazy the Porsche queens will be watching their cars go around the track from the paddock and talking about who's car is better?

I agree with your driver involvement reasoning, but that doesn't seem to matter.

We all thought the GT3 would be the last car to lose the manual box, and the M3 would always have a manual at least as an option.

The problem is that everyone needs to have good numbers in their headline. It is expensive to develop two cars (one manual and one flappy paddle) and the take rate has been proven to favor the flappy paddle box. You also must consider the people who buy $100,000+ cars
