So both the mufflers you've done were on cars with stock DP's?

I'm confused, above you're saying you've done the wrap method, AND your cats are deleted, yet you're saying in the first post I quoted don't do this mod if you have catless DP's?

Plus, you said wrapping will eventually come off but did it yourself...

Also, one more question. Which perf pipe have you replaced on the pass side? Your pic is confusing, because it looks like the driver's side muffler.

It will also be raspy. I wouldnt recommend it.

Next....Wrapping it with anything will eventually fall off. Just cut them with a die grinder, change to a thin cutting wheel or use an electric saw. Replace with pipe.

This is the best method. Replace the pipes and leave the packing.
My setup had no drone fyi but I did not remove all the packing. Muffler-delete people don't get drone, but lots of rasp. Packing in this style muffler only affects volume and sound. Not drone. Drone is reverberation and can happen nearly anywhere. Many many cars reduce drone in catback systems by removing the cat. My s2000 did this and they were notorious for it. M3 exhausts are similar.

Fwiw, i find many on this forum to be big babies when it comes to drone and seem to confuse volume and drone. Listen to various setups and go with what you like. The best sound exhaust I ever heard for an n54 was a simple dixis dual muffler setup (like magnaflows with tips) and an xpipe. Sounded smooth, little drone, and had supra-like tone.

ok guys, im going to try to do some drive-by, fly-by videos on what i did on the passenger side and post it up this weekend. talked to my muffler guy, i may go ahead and open up the driver side sometimes next week and do the same thing as we did on the passenger side.

so far the driving experience from modding the passenger side, normal driving/cruising are about the same as the regular PE nothing more or less. as gas paddle is getting deeper and rpm rises higher to 3800+, the tone gets louder and more pronounce versus regular PE at higher rpm. on a regular PE i say the overall sound at high rpm is 50% from engine and 50% from exhaust. with the passenger side mod, i say it's about 40% from engine and 60% from exhaust now.

i want to explore more what is going to happen if im doing the driver side next week, i don't care about sound level, as long as i do not hear rasp and drone, that's my goal. and some people complain about "too loud", hell, the PE isn't quiet to begin with anyway, hahahaha, i just want to bring out the high rpm tone more so it sounds more "exotic".

sorry to leave you guys stranded on only solving 1/2 of the mystery on the PE, but stay tuned i can ensure sure the other 1/2 will be opened up next week for sure =)

happy friday guys!

Great to hear. IIRC, after doing yours, you said if you were going to do it all over again, you'd want a bit more sound even. So would you then cover the outer perf pipe/replace it on the pass side to make it like the PE, AND take out some packing?

+1

I removed 100% of the packing on both sides and do not have any issue with drone. Wish I had covered some of the perforation though as it didn't make as much difference in volume as I had hoped.

I did this as well. I removed all the packing from both mufflers and had all the pipes inside it wrapped in titanium heatwrap. The result is amazing gorgeous sound that sounds like the PE (i think) and pops.

Issue is it drones a decent amount but thats it. Sounds very nice, get compliments everywhere!

Please excuse the shitty videos, its much more deeper in person and pops. I would advise you to listen to video with headphones as that captures the true sound. Cold start is decently loud.

I've got another idea... For those of us who don't want to cut out the perforated pipes and replace them with solid pipes, since the stock exhaust pass side has two perf pipes, I'm thinking if we cover the top half of both of the perf pipes with a solid pipe, then maybe that'll be easier/quicker than replacing one with a solid pipe. Same perf area would effectively remain between the two pipes as the PE shown below.

Or just wrap both of the perf pipes. westchester335i above seems to indicate that it works well too. Wonder how much more sound passes thru wraps all the way around vs. the top half of the perf pipe covered with a solid pipe?

sorry on the shaky video, im not a great video person and the road isn't smooth and i kept pointing to here and there... hahahaha
it's a short city driving between buildings and kinda give you guys an idea of the volume. i know the buildings bounce off the sound quite a bit. and the whole video is with driver side and passenger side windows 1/2 way down.
the first few second of the video is under a short bridge.

im telling you guys, i don't know if i want to do the same mod on the driver side now, specially under the short bridge getting on the throttle at high rpm, it is LOUD! and then follow by driving around town, once rpm is around 3000 and i let off the gas you can hear the pop, and a few of 3->2 downshift and you can hear the pop pretty clear too, then the last is getting onto freeway next to a short barrel wall.

definitely the higher the rpm the more attention it catches people to look at you. before modding the PE the high rpm is still somewhat loud but not as loud as now. driving around neighborhood i for sure need to keep the rpm lower than 3000. anyway just a follow up and showing what it sounds in the city. enjoy!

Funny to see the pictures of mine resurfacing 6 years later!
I took the stockers apart back in 2007! I'm on my second 335 now!
see thread : http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88171- just realized pics are deleted

I lurked this thread since it began and its awesome to see you guys are still at it! Always kept the exhaust stock because I never liked any of the options, until now!!!

Big thanks to lawwailok and white fury for all their hard work! Truly helping the community!

I'll be returning to New York in December and this is the first thing on my list to get done!

Really can't thank you guys enough!

I just opened up my mufflers for the second time.

A couple months ago I opened them up and covered 60% of the main passenger pipe, then 30% of the passenger y pipe with solid piping. On the driver muffler I covered 30% of the y pipe with solid piping. I did not mess with the built in resonator. I replaced back with about 25% insulation. This sounded a little better than factory, but still wasn't what I was looking for.

Since we have found out more about the PE exhaust, I decided to open them up again and change it up. I made the passenger side main pipe straight, the passenger y pipe 30% covered. On the driver side I left the y pipe perforated(removed the pipe covering that I had last time). I then opened up the resonator and made that a solid pipe also. I did not have to cut open the bottom part of my muffler and was able to do everything from the top. Please don't judge my terrible welding. haha

Who is doing your mod and how much? I was thinking about doing the PE exhaust but couldn't justify 1k on mufflers. After seeing this thread and how (sophisticated) the PE exhaust really is I'm glad that i didn't since this mod would be a better solution for a lot less money.

Man, maybe i should learn to weld lol. I've always wanted to since you can literally build anything you want when you know how to weld.

I say do it. What better way to learn? You will probably break even on money, purchasing a welder versus paying someone to do it, but in the end you will have your own welder for future projects!

put it this way, money doesn't count as i look at it as part of the experiment. SVS did and will be doing all my work, most people will say im stupid spending that kind of amount to do the mod but all i can say, SVS craftsmanship worth the money they charge

Lol, what do they charge? Once the mod is done on your car i may just have them do it on mine lol.
