BMW 335d vs Audi S3 1.8T

Right, had a bit of a run in with an S3 last night.
Whilst approaching double lane traffic lights which had just turned green I overtook a number of cars and at the front an old model S3.
I didnt want to race tbh, however he seemed to take exception to being overtaken. After about 3 miles driving very steady through town I notice that hes still behind me.
I live out in the country side and so didnt think much of it until he hammered past me on a 50mph dual carriage way. I casually kept him in sight without really pushing too hard and doing huge speeds however we got to another set of traffic lights which are directly before a national speed limit dual carriageway.

He floored it and to be completely honest until about 60/70 mph he was very gradually pulling away which completely surprised me. Considering I was in DS and DTC was on, I thought I would have kept up with him easily. It was only until we got past 70mph did I finally notice he was being quickly reeled in.
He stayed in front of me as I was turning off about half a mile down the road so didnt see the point of getting past him. Gave him a quick double flash of the full beams and he gave me a quick hazards flash. Bit of mutual respect lol

Does this surprise anyone as I thought the big D would have mullered a 1.8T S3. I know it could have modded (remap etc) without me knowing, however it does seems strange.

I can hear people whispering remap to me, dont worry i definately will be getting it done. Just not until we start seeing a lot more sunshine (like yesterday for ppl in SW) as theres nothing more infuriating than having a car going nowhere and a load of lights flashing at you on the dials when accelerating.

Massive weight advantage, quite easily remapped too.

Your extra 60-80bhp will only really show at higher speeds when you need more power to plough through air resistance.

335d quite sensitive to road condition too.

I think they are about 220BHP in stock form with a 0-60 of just over 6 secs so they are pretty nippy.

I once saw one beat a clio so they must have tuning potential.

I remember one time I came up against one of these in my old 200sx (why did I break it for parts, oh yea to get my beemer) was cruising along at 100mph on the private motorway when all of a sudden something is like 2" off my bumper...crapped it thinking it may be the private traffic cops I have on my estate so slowed down to 70, pulled into middle lane and along passes this blue 2008/2009 audi S3.....so I thought "oh no you don't" dropped a gear or two and promptly flew back up behind him, few flashes and he wouldn't move over so undertook (silly I know, but you know...) and went past him like he was sitting still accelerated upto 155 and he was a good bit behind me in the distance, slowed down for him to catch up and he gave the thumbs up! that would have been 262bhp, my Nissan was 400bhp and looked like a pile of shite if i'm honest. No contest but it had to be done...sorry slightly off topic I just like telling the story, most of these S3 owners think they are untouchable.

Damp road and the S3 will accelerate well. Should have done a rolling 60 run!

Ran up to 225PS (222HP) in the last version they did, but very easily tunable to over 350 with lots of money. Think there's one on a forum somewhere that runs 400. Although with that power standard gearbox, clutch, etc must not last long...

Depending on the year/model, they come with 265 BHP standard, with good petrol throttle response are very nippy.

Creepy - that's the current shape, not the old one. Easily tuned cars but not that fun to drive. I chose an R32 Golf over one - bags more character.

Have they changed shape then Ok it's a 235 BHP model and as for the R32 as long as it's the Mk5 I agree, except the manual gearbox is shite.

having owned a remapped 09 335d and now a remapped 10 s3 i can tell you there very different cars... If that wasnt obvious!

S3 doesnt have the sledgehammer like torque like the 335d has but the s3 has some almighty shove once the turbo kicks in and just keeps pulling.
New s3's are quoted at 265bhp but in reality its more like 280.
Mine is around 320 with just a map.
335d has far better mpg tho.

Creepy - first 1.8t version was 210bhp. In about 2003 this was upped to 225. That's the one I tested. The current version, out since about 2007, has a 265bhp 2.0 litre unit and is a fair bit quicker. In fact evenly matched to a 335d. Old one shouldn't be too much bother but many are chipped.

I had the mk4 r32. It was a cracking little car.

That's the latest model you're on about mate (8P). The 225bhp (8L) model reaches around the 265bhp mark once remapped..
Remap the 8P version and you will have 300bhp

Im glad some of you noticed the 1.8T point i made. I couldnt tell you the year as it was a personalised reg. Just that it definately was the 8L model S3.
I used to have an A3 so it was only normal that i knew what the S3 was

Its because it was the old model that it surprised me. The new S3 as posted by other members is 265bhp 2.0T Quattro so is almost same power as 335d but in a lighter body.
I knew that that would have been quicker than my 335d, whereas I knew the old one was about 220 so thought it was dog food!
How wrong I was lol!

DavS1, what do you mean by 'private' motorway lol
How have u still got a license?

Insurance company have told me I must behave myself carlos otherwise the car will have to be sold, so no rolling 60 - 120 for now. 0-85 is about as much as im willing to risk.

Got a lot of time for your cars there Matt. Did you go S-Tronic or Manual in the S3?
Do you still have the R35 GTR?

If anyone saw the weather yesterday in the South West it was warm and sunny as you you could hope for in February. Perfect conditions.

P.S. We're on a BMW forum and everyone keeps mentioning the clio. Why?

Well a speeding ban 2 years ago (M6 Toll) and 6 points have given Mr Insurance a big fat grin on his face!

Its still a piece of french merde that is built about as well as a toy you get out of a cheap christmas cracker

Drove a new Renault Espace the other day (Rental in France) and didnt think they still did cars where u literally rocked back and forth for every gear change. Absolutely shocking!!!!!

GT-R went to make way for the S3 - far more practical for needs and got the S-Tronic version as could never go back to a manual now

I had S-Tronic / DSG in my A3 2.0TDI.
Got Auto now in the 335d but could never go back to manual either, although i do see the attraction if you only do pleasure miles rather than business miles

I never liked the S3 - it's like most fast Audi's...a bit boring. I thought the Mk5 GTi had allot more character. Mind, the Quattro system is superb in the winter and does give you a very safe feeling.

The new RS3 has a price tag of nearly £40k...standard. Mind boggling money for a small car.

My car isn't boring I'll have you know lol. If you mean they don't 'flatter' you into thinking you're a good driver then yes, you have a point and yes, a fault I'd say, if you can call it a fault, is that you can lack a sense of how fast you're really going, until you check out the digital speedo, my excuse why 6 of my points were gained in the S5.

Quattro should not be used as a given to be fool hardy though, physics are physics.

Tis a lot of money for a small car, but technology isn't cheap these days. Dry sump lubrication a la Porsche, 4 pot piston calipers and brakes made in conjunction with Brembo (apparently), dual clutch gearbox as standard etc and that's just the RS3. The little 1M is also the same price @ £39,990 OTR but without the above features and in manual box.
