Genie Lamp on my dashboard.
So while I was driving home tonight, the engine oil symbol popped up on my dash. My car has 6400 miles on it. I haven't had the oil changed yet because BMW advised me that the cars good for the first year. I want to change the oil now and put in some Mobil 1 0W-40. If i was to change the oil myself, does it reset the maintenance settings already programmed into the car?

Nope, it won't reset, and you shouldn't want it to. The best way to do oil changes is between the service intervals on the car. Let them do those, and you do the ones halfway between, and you'll cut the time the oil is in the car in half.
GL man!
