Carfax Accident Reported but Vehicle was not damaged

Would you buy a car with a carfax "accident reported involving front impact" - vehicle not damaged? From the pictures the car seems to be perfect. The seller told me it was a tap and they called the police and did not even get it inspected by bmw. My guess is that this might affect resale because you would have to explain that it was a "tap" and no damage incurred. Is it worth the risk?

Carfax states vehicle not damaged? or the seller is stating that?

I don't think it will affect resell as far as value, but I do think that it's kind of shaddy.

I would have the car inspected first by a BMW certified center, before purchase.

yeah could be shady, the car is still under 4yr/50k warranty and cpo. Is it necessary for me to get a prepurchase inspection?

I had a similar situation with my previous car. I was involved in a minor 2mph accident and the other driver insisted on calling the cops. Neither car had any damage and no insurance companies were called. When I went to sell the car I found out that the carfax showed an "Accident" with "No Damage Reported To Carfax" on the report.

All of those reports are a crock!

I bought my current 2010 335i with a clean carfax. However on the autocheck report is shows that the auction house reported damage. I had the car checked out prior to purchase and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the car. I later find out that the auction reports damage to autocheck to cover their ass in the rare event the purchaser finds something wrong and it was not reported.

It's all a bunch of BS. Just get the car checked out before buying it and if you do decide to buy make sure you get at least a 15% discount.

Yes. I had this happen on a car I owned. Had a minor fender bender and called the cops because there was a teenage female driver involved. Police report generated a CARFAX entry. Damage was so minor I fixed it myself which didn't affect any body panels, paint or structural component. When I traded the car, I had to explain what had happened and the dealer was OK with it and I got full trade in value.

When I bought my car last year & after having it for just 2 weeks. A woman swing her door wide open & hit my passenger door at a grocery parking lot. There's a lot of space in between our car but she just carelessly open her door widely. Anyway, she doesn't want to talk & just walked away & says it's only a minor damage. I got her license plate & made a police report.

This is the first time it happened to me. In short, the ding got fixed but little to my knowledge that an accident appeared to my car's history. If I only knew, I would have just chase the lady & insist her to pay the damage or I should have just paid the repair myself without making a police report. Now, the damage has been done & the history of accident is tagged in my car & I don't know how it will affect the resale value of my car.

So, if the car is not damaged & has an accident report...most likely it might be just something similar to my case. You can ask the owner if they have a report from the insurance of the damage they fix.

Keep the repair documents handy and show them to the dealer or buyer to prove what the report covers.

OP, all great info as Carfax and Autocheck are far from perfect and mistakes are commonplace.

Keep documentation to refute the Carfax and you are golden.

I have a similar experience with a mileage discrepancy that was false and sold my car without issues because I had the documentation to back it up.

I don't think carfax is reliable enough about accidents for it to affect the value. It's good for seeing if the title is good, but the details of it seem to be off pretty often.

On my e46 I got an Mtech II bumper and had it painted at a body shop and then installed it myself.

Apparently the body shop is linked with carfax, because it showed up on the carfax as having had repairs, even though I was replacing a stock bumper with nothing wrong.

I'm actually getting a door ding repaired on my e90 soon, I'm wondering if that will show up as an "accident."

This is just personal opinion here, but I'm generally comfortable even if minor damage has occurred AND it's a CPO vehicle. To some, that may be placing too much trust in the CPO inspection and conditioning, but cars are cars. They break, sometimes because of other parties besides the manufacturer, but as long as the damage wasn't major and it was easily repaired, then why worry?

Obviously it matters what kind of "minor accident" it was and what repairs were required, etc., but that's why I talk it through with the car dealer if I see it on the report so I can make a more informed decision.

In general though, I think it's important to remember that "accident" can mean a lot of different things and end up anywhere on a spectrum of seriousness/severity from a little bump to a totaled car.

If anybody ever files a class action lawsuit against Carfax let me know...can't imagine how many people they screwed with their fucking inaccurate accident reports.
Try to trade-in a car with carfax accident on file, even though it may have been a tap on the bumper or scratched door...they basically want to steal it from you.

Yeah, nowadays everybody should keep detailed records of all accidents where another party is involved or notified, especially insurance or the police.

You never know what database you or your car is in today.

Accidents could be very minor, or major, and these carfax reports often don't reveal the true details of the accident so you'll have to dig.
