I searched but couldn't quite come up with the answer to my dilemma.

I have an 07 e92 with the silver window trim. It's old an oxidized etc but I'm wanting black trim anyway. And $1500+ for oem black trim is absurd.


So, do I vinyl or paint? I hate plastidip and I'm not looking for a temporary fix so plastidip isn't much of an option. Does paint holdup to normal wear and tear? Or how does the shadowline vinyl hold up? What paint to use to achieve a gloss black look?

Any help from someone that's done it before is greatly appreciated.

I would vinyl wrap the trim. It's simple if you take your time and will look great. There are many great threads on here that have videos and instructions on how to vinyl wrap.

I was considering it but I read plenty threads where people said it was ripping in spots. I'm looking to do it once and be done.

Honestly, id trust a quality vinyl over paint every day.

I went with vinyl and I'm pretty happy... 2 1/2 years later still. I had some friends go with the paint route and they had tons of headaches. One went back to the body shop because with the pressure washer from one of those do it yourself car washes blasted some of the paint off lol! It had set already and what not too! But yea, save yourself the headache....go with vinyl!

Yea that actually makes sense. I may just vinyl it and try it first and see how that goes.

Go for it bro, after I made my appointment and all and watched them do it I thought to myself "Faaack I could have done this myself!" Just get some extra vinyl incase you mess up. It's fairly cheap too so it's not going to hurt if you have a fuck up here and there and some vinyl goes to waste.

I didn't think it was super hard and I was doing it myself no matter which route I choose. Just trying to see what's the most durable because I don't want to do it more than once.

I just plastidipped my chrome trim couple hours ago and it came out pretty well. Only cost me $6 and two hours of my time, I just wanted to see how it would look and if I didn't like it I could just take it off.

Looks really good man. Ill be honest though, I hate plastidip. I'm not into that fad. I'd rather just use paint and I'm going for a gloss look like real shadowline and to match my kidney grills.

But I can understand its hard to beat that for 6 bucks lol.

I know what you mean but I just had to do it, I mean I didn't feel like coughing up $200+ for a shop to vinyl wrap my window trim when I can use it to buy other mods and I heard doing it yourself is a hassle on the lower part of the trim especially getting under the side mirror.

gloss black vinyl > matte black plastidip

and vinyl wrapping the trim isn't "hard"... it's just fucking time consuming as hell if it's your first time. the easiest way to wrap it is to just get a giant ass sheet of vinyl and cover the whole window/trim and then cut out the shape of the trim. then wrap it. that way you don't have to deal with trying to curve the vinyl around the stupid rear kink (that's the frustrating part). the rest of the trim is cake.

I had my window trim plastidipped....i ripped it off and vinyl wrapped it gloss black and it looks alot better

Yea I'm going to go with vinyl first and see how that works out. A detailer I know says that the plastidip comes right off when he washes wheels so I don't trust it too much.

most people are happy with the way plasti dip looks specially when you have OEM bmw performance gloss black grills. The best and cheapest route to go is vinyl wrap. As E92Lunatic said... he has had his done for a couple years now and no problems at all.

I can help you guys vinyl wrap window trims, interior trim or your roof. I have a thread up with pictures of some of the work I have done.
