How do I measure 88-90 ft-lbs of torque?

"Now fully tighten the lugs, I believe BMW spec is around 88-90 ft-lbs of torque."

How do I measure this? Is there some inexpensive device I can buy?

theres a torque wrench you can get, it has a dial which you can use to set your desired torque and just tighten it hard untill the wrench clicks

I want to put my tires on now. But the auto stores are closed. Can i overtighten it and adjust it tomorow with the wrench? Will that cuase any damage?

I work like 40 miles out of town and theres a ton of ice and snow on the freeway. So I want to put my tires on asap

Torque wrench from Habor Freight. Check it out, or search for it on google.

Great and cheap torque wrench for these types of situations, ~$20.

It is hard to gauge how much torque is for various parts, especially if you are not used to it or have a lot of experience. The torque may also feel different with different tools too, depending on how long it is, etc.

Don't be cheap. Unevenly torqued nuts/lugs can cause damaged wheels/rotors/hubs/etc, since they are getting uneven stresses/torques.

iF You have a spring balance you can tighten the nut by pulling the balance on the end of a 2 foot lever until it reads around 45lbs. Or 90lbs on a 1 foot lever.

Harbor freight has the best prices. You can probably also find a beam-type at any local auto store for cheap.

Torque wrenches can get pricey. I got one of the "beam" style. Not the most accurate I wouldn't imagine, but it'll get you close enough. I got it a few years back and think I paid around 30 for it at sears.

Just get one from Canadian Tire. I have one and it works fine.

Not exactly right. Although it can vary from torque wrench to torque wrench. Most of the time, a torque wrench will click, to let you know that you have reached that desired torque. However, most of the time, it will not stop or prevent you from continueing to torque and apply force to the the bolt, thus causeing you to over torque it.

It's also important that you torque the bolts in the star pattern, crossing over to the bolt on the opposite side as you go. I start all of them lightly, then torque in the star pattern.
