Straight pipes sound A LOT better under load, but I love the raspyness followed by hearing the turbos spool down.
First and second gear are LOL...

The e46 M3 is far from 'rice' but to answer OP's question: no the 335i can't sound like that. However, if you do like a more high pitched scream, I thought the AE exhaust had a pretty decent wail to it with downpipes. Straight pipes can also rasp a little but nowhere close to the e46 M3. With headers it's a rasp machine.
I always enjoyed the N54 gurgle and pops. IMO, you should embrace the car's sound. The e46 M3 will rasp and scream, Vettes have big grunty V8s, and the N54 has this amazing gurgle, pop, and wail up top. |

Here's how my car sounds with AE Exhaust and VRSF downpipes. One thing you might want to keep in mind is that your car is going to get a lot of unwanted attention from the 5-0. The cops over here have undercover 535i wagons and I got well and truly busted having a little fun at 12:30am. When the cop walked away he smiled and told me my car was "ho-leng." Bastard. Anyway, courtesy of IcyJ

So it doesn't sound like a ricer; hate to say it but most of the exhaust kids makes sound like a slightly deeper tone ricer. Those videos actually have somewhat of a F1 car sound. Took a poll since I have about ten people over, none of them have BMW's and 9/10 chose those clips over some of the 335i exhaust clips.

It's a combination with catless AR DPs and straight AE quad exhaust setup.
It sounds really nice! I've installed BMS DP on my 335is and cold start sounds similar to that youtube clip. Under heavy load, around 4500~5000 rpm, it sounds like a F1 car! I LOVE the 335is exhaust system! +1!! |

I also love the sound that csl makes! It's a pure auto racing sound, usually tuned hi hp engines have that sound, just watch 24hr lemans and jgtc races...
