Singapore GP 2012 pics
Lucky enough to get tickets to the Singapore GP this year as a brithday present from the wife, loved it, took about 16gig of photos, heres a few
Some Pre race warm up, normally I would say 911s and 458s are pretty exotic but compared to F1 and GP2 cars these were pretty 'ordinary' GP2 cars, good action, amazing how close you could get to the drivers...am sure some of them will be future F1 champs Last edited by gangzoom; 09-29-2012 at 01:28 AM.. |

...and finally some off track action
They opened up the 'track' at the end of the race, it was very cool to actually walk along the corners and get a view of what the drivers see!! On the way back to the airport our taxi ended up taking us onto turn 3/4...found the road a bit bumpy even at 30mph, cannot imagine doing the same bit of tarmac at 130mph with concrete barriers either side!! Camera body used was a 550D. Have to say the high (>800) ISO performance of the 550D is much better than my old 450D, and looking at the reviews even the 650D isn't much better.
Most of the car shots were done with my Canon 70-300mm 3.5-5.6 IS lens, would love to have a faster L lens but cannot justify spending nearly £1K on a lens I would only use everytime I go to a GP Other shots were done on the Canon 17-55mm f 2.8 IS lens, this isn't cheap but has to be my favourite lens, the sharpness even when wide open is fab Been Singapore there was ofcourse some aweason looking camera stuff onsale everywhere... |

Well, that at least gives me hope, I've got a 550d too with Canon 28-135 lens so maybe I need to read the manual properly

Wow, just spotted this thread. I was there too, but my photo's aren't fit for this thread as they are not a patch on them.
Amazing wasn't it?? Where'd you stay? I was looking for a pal too, my wife and baby daughter were only interested to a point....

Thanks for all the comments about the photos
I found the whole experience just amazing, if you only get the opportunity to go to one GP I think Singapore has to be very near the top of the list....still it was all down to my lovely wife for buying me the tickets in the first place as a birthday present...and than agreeing to sit out in 30degree+ heat looking after my camera gear whilst I went wondering around the track |

Gangzoom, stunning shots.
Like Dannyrado, I was lucky to be there too for the race. Sat in turn 1 / 2 grandstand (right where Lewis' gearbox spewed itself through his exhausts ). My photo's are not worthy of posting in light of your superb shots. Not least because as a novice I hadn't realised that leaving VR on my lens actually made things worse when trying to pan with the cars. Agree though, the fact that this is a night race and city/street circuit, makes it special. Thanks for posting your shots, and showing us how good ours SHOULD be !! David

Glad people enjoy the photos..to be quite honest I was quite surprised at how sharp most of the images were!! Consider the combined cost of the lens and camera body came in at £550 (both were bought 2nd hand). Panning shots were hard to do, had to use manual focus a bit which was a pain because the cars would be only in focus for literally 0.1 sec. The fence/spectators/lights were all confusing the AF, though when the AF did "lock on" it was spot on. Interestingly I found the “rapid fire/mutlishot” mode on the camera almost useless, you just end up with 7 shots of nearly the same thing but badly composed and out of focus. I know alot of people feel the need to get a camera that can shot at 6-7 fps for sports but virtually all the good shots I got were taken on single shot mode.
Only just had time to upload the photos on to the laptop. Some more close up shots, I love the fact you can almost see the eyes of the drivers in a few shots (the brits were all been cool by wearing reflective visors)!! Last edited by gangzoom; 10-09-2012 at 06:21 AM.. |
