Absolute Bollocks. Its beyond the wit of man to invent anything as daft as that.
The bimmers we see outperforming front wheel drive cars on icy slopes and snowy lanes are obviously driven by super humans (and Stigs).

Well it’s all true but I don’t think you can get them in UK probably are not legal. In Sweden is compulsory to have winter tyres on your car from Dec 1 to Mar 31. You can have normal winter tyres or winter spiked tyres. With the spiked ones you can only drive on snow and ice. If you ever find yourself in Sweden in winter is truly amazing how cars can go 90 miles/hour on icy/snow highways with -15C. First time I’ve been there and got a taxi from the airport to go downtown in January I couldn’t believe it.

Other Points to Remember
Damage to road, person or vehicle
If the tyre causes either damage to the road, or to persons, or to any vehicle using the road. This would cover such instances as if a vehicle with damaged or very oversized tyres which either caught against a person or other vehicle resulting in either damage or injury. Studded tyres also are included in this clause and if used in inappropriate conditions (i.e. where there is no ice or snow) and they damage the road surface then they would be clearly illegal.

Probably true, he didn’t want to miss happy hour, but then I understood why some of the best drivers and WRC champions are Scandinavian. When you master drifting and controlling a car in snow and ice then controlling a car in any other surface is not that hard.

Does any of you think that his driving skills improved since driving in snow/ice?

I couldn't disagree more. Drifting and sliding around with an armful of opposite lock is dead easy in the snow because the speeds are so much slower and the grip, or lack of, is consistent. You can get into a slide and hold it there until you get bored.

On dry tarmac this is much more difficult as full-grip can be almost instantaneously restored at much higher speeds and hence you can suddenly snap in the wrong direction if you don't get the lock off quickly enough. It's not uncommon to see "good" amateur racers stuffing it up through over correction and what amounts to a tank-slapper.

Of course, scandinavians being used to these conditions can get to a point where the very principle of opposite lock, cadence braking and so-on is second nature which obviously helps in a career like rallying but don't think the ability to correct a rwd slide in the snow in your works carpark makes you Hannu Mikkola.

I'll stay with my slicks (well bald tyres actually) and spray my liquid snowchain on if I get stuck!
