500-1000 over invoice is normally exceptional.

Then manifest an outrage stand up and walk away, try another dealership. I heard that dealerships gauge you the minute you walk in, so they figure they can walk over you and the are doing that. Create your own price invoice + $500 then fax it to few places who wants to accept it will call you)

Dont go in empty handed, go to edmunds.com and do a search for your car and get the true market value (TMV) of it around your zip code. Add in all the options you want...get a print out and bring it with you. Most dealership will offer a price match.

You can do that on http://www.carsdirect.com/

Select your car and even a dealership that accepts the price. Print it out and go there.

Amex Zag...calculates what you should pay for. The dealership MUST honor the price from that website...

What is everybody's opinion on using an auto broker to do the negotiations for you? I just ran into this website. http://expressautolease.com/index.html

This should be your goal ^
EDIT: Realistically speaking you should go as cheap as possible, but $500 USD under invoice is more than reasonable!

When you talk to them, be assertive yet friendly. I was negotiating a VW Tiguan for a friend. I was the one doing all the talking. After the test drive, he asked, "what do you want to accomplish today?" My reply was, "well I'm here to buy a car. Thought you were in business to sell. Was I wrong?" It gave him a chuckle and in we went.
Then I started with, "Look, i'm here to buy a car and I don't want to play any games going back & forth. I have a set number in mind. If we make a deal, GREAT, if not, there's always another dealership".
This puts them in perspective. and also establishes a status quo that favors you!!!
Also NEVER EVER speak FIRST when the sales guy arrives with his offer. The one who speaks first, ends up the weaker link... Let the sales guy break the silence!!!
Hope this helps...

Oh. To give you what I accomplished. The sticker for a Tiguan was $25456. I got him down to $22404... That was less than invoice.

Also remember, Dealers have what they call Dealer Holdback. Usually a % of the Invoice. Ideally what you would like is to get the car at invoice (minus their holdback)...

I got several dealer quotes using truecar.com and had the local dealership beat them.

Being from NYC, we have a lot of dealer-brokers and they almost always give you the best deal. With that being said, there are so many rebates and credits today that most cars are way under invoice. I would suggest you contact these type of dealers for best deals.

When I ordered my car, I first called and made an appointment. I had done my homework on this forum as to how Euro Delivery pricing worked, and based on that and Edmunds I came up with a target price. That worked out to be about $500 over Euro invoice, call it $5-6K under US MSRP. I went in for my appointment, sat down with the sales guy and told him what I wanted, and what I thought a fair price would be. I also made it quite clear that I traveled for a living, and while my preference was to deal with them (1.5 miles from my house, only dealer in my state), it would cost me nothing but time to go elsewhere. They came back with a counter of ~$1500 off US MSRP (can't blame them for trying). I thanked him for his time and left. Took about an hour for them to call me. That led to several calls back and forth, ultimately they got within a couple hundred bucks of my target, which was close enough on a $40k transaction. Not worth my time or energy to negotiate any harder.

In hindsight, I probably revealed too much by telling them my target price, but ultimately I was happy with the price I paid. You can probably do better on a car that has been sitting on the lot for a while, or whatever. In early 2011, the only factory incentive on a purchase was exceptionally cheap financing, I got .9% for five years.

One thing that impressed me is that we agreed on a price a couple days before BMW messed around with MSRP in March 2011, but I had nothing signed. The changes would have resulted in a nearly $1000 price increase, but my dealer did not even try to go back on the deal. Several folks on this forum had dealers try to screw with them over this.

everyone is trying to make money so they will bluff for sure. In LA it might be hard as there are tons of rich people, maybe you might have to find a more low key dealer who will be willing to work with you. My brother got it from McKenna BMW and they have pretty good pricing from what I saw. have you talked to them?

also if you look really young, take your parents or something. Just saying as lot of the dealers think young people don't care about money and they will pay whatever the dealer asks.

I have always used cars.com to get some quotes from dealership and then take the lowest offering and call local dealers to see if they will beat it by a little. That has always worked for me til now. Let's see now the new year does for me.
