You can take me off the list. I just paid for the spacer and bolts. Thanks again man hope everything works out. I'll definitely be posting a review when I install it.

Rich thanks for the order and fyi your inbox is full again and I need your address, but i figure ill just let everyone know this so there is no confusion in the future.
For those looking to purchase the part and pay via paypal, please send me the full amount. The part cost $60 to make and Im paying for shipping and the bolts because they are minor costs and I dont care, but I need $60 to get the part made, not $57.96 (after paypal fee this is what i get). I dont usually care about a couple of dollars but i am already spending extra money to pay for shipping and for the bolts. I hope you guys can understand. Its just if everyone starts paying me $57.96 I am now loosing money and it doesnt make sense to even manufacture the parts (not to mention I have to drive around to pick them up and ship them). If you would like to mail a check to aviod the fee that is fine but obviously this will take longer. Or if you all would like I can just charge $62.04 and then there will not be a problem, either way I need $60 to get the part made unless we get a group buy going.
Thanks everyone,
-Tim

Update: I was experiencing a huge power loss from 1-4K..

I did not add a spacer.. I just replaced my MAF.. and the problem disappeared. Now I have LOADS of power before 4K and absolutely not a hint of surging.. rev's smoothly through the power band and the intake has definitely gotten a lot louder.

Just an FYI for those people who are in the same boat as I was in.

Hope this helps.

It will happen again. This is because the filter dirties the sensor. You shoul buy the fix if you want to fix the problem permanently. And Tim I included my address in the PayPal message. Let me know if you need it as I cleared my inbox. Thanks

To be honest.. I cleaned the old MAF thoroughly multiple times and the issue did not get resolved.

The new MAF that I just put in today is filthy and is working perfectly.. Going to clean it off as well when I get a chance.

I don't think the MAF position was ever the issue on my car. When I first installed it it ran perfectly until I messed around with the MAF.. now with the new MAF it is perfect again.

Also, raising the MAF by .5 inches isn't going to stop the filter from dirtying it FYI.. over-oiled filters will still leak oil onto the raised MAF. because it will still be within the intake tube.. just slightly higher.

This fix has to do with the positioning of the MAF sensor on the aFe intake, not the MAF sensor itself. Glad it worked for you though, for me my MAF was fine but the positioning seemed to be the culprit, therefore the spacer was the solution just as the op describes.

Oh I totally get what the spacer would be used for - to sit higher in the intake tube. I just found that the new MAF fixed the fault for me completely and now the car is running great again.

So I'm just putting it out there that I was experiencing the IDENTICAL power surging issue (no power below 4K) and power surge exactly as the rev's hit 4K.

I also know that plenty of people were running fine with the AFE Stage 2 intake that had NO problems despite the MAF placement. So I'm just telling people that the MAF placement might not necessarily be the cause of this power-surge.

One way to tell is to disconnect the MAF and drive around.. if the surging stops... then it is likely a dirty or damaged MAF as it were in my case... so I doubt the spacer would help.

I found it weird that only a few people had this issue resolved with a MAF spacer while the majority of AFE Intake buyers had no issues whatsoever with the stock intake.

I would first THOROUGHLY check for Vacuum Leaks and then your MAF.. before opting for a custom spacer solution.

Just my experience.. hope this helps.

I'll see how it is with the spacer. If the sensor really is the culprit then so be it. I just seem to think that it is because I've been getting CEL with fuel mixture too rich In both banks. I never had that problem until the intake so personally I believe that it's the spacer fix that will help. Also I switched over to a dry filter and it helped a little bit. Like I said the problem is different for everyone

Correct, we had no issues with the stock intake, only started having problems when we switched to the aFe intake. This is due to the height of the MAF sensor. If the MAF sensor is the problem, you will have issues regardless of what kind of intake you have.

I had this same issue as well as the RPM needle twitching, the car struggling and turning itself off (when stopped). I would be sitting at red lights and my car would "stall" RPMs drop to 0. Took it to a mechanic because I was confused to what it was, we decide to try a new MAF and that was not the issue it continued. Swapped to stock intake and problem solved. I don't understand how this big of an issue passed through and went into production. I tried calling them, they said that they never heard of the issue and that they would look into it and call me back (which never happened) been couple
months now..anyway I hope this works because I am not in favor of throwing away $300. Waiting for some confirmations that it does fix the issue before I throw down more cash on this intake...

Well hopefully we can get some more testimonials to help confirm this fix, I know it worked for me and it seems like it worked for a couple other people so I guess time will tell. Locdawgg just bought one off me and Im getting one made for rich123321 right now so hopefully they also see positive results.

Will I need to seal off the aluminum spacer once I install it? Or should it be all good to go. And will I need to remove my original rubber gasket from aFe or will it go over the spacer

If you are mounting aluminum to plastic I would def seal it. I would use rubber or use high temp rtv. Does the MAF sensor oring fit inside this new spacer like it does in the tube?

Recently installed an aFe kit on my E90. Would like to try this solution to maximize performance and location of the MAF.

Thanks Tim, will PM you and also sent email.

Yes you will need to seal the spacer to the plastic intake tube, I used high temp rtv silicone and it worked great (the red kind by permatex), I will provide some directions with the spacer and bolts. @DaytonM exactly, the MAF o-ring fits right inside the spacer just like on the tube

No that threadlock is for screws, you will need high temp rtv silicone, heres a pic and a link to what it looks like

I tried contacting the company to get some sample packs to include with the spacer but they dont make any for this product

I'm not sure that dead between 1k and 4k is the typical afe symptom. For me mine was just not smooth in that powerband. For example accelerating smoothly in 1st would sometimes result in a violent buck or hesitation around 2k rpm... Kind of like I couldn't drive a manual correctly... Of course it wasn't me though. Adding the spacer 100% smoothed things out, but I wouldn't say the car is really much faster or slower as a result. Hope that helps explain it.
