First day of the rest of my life.....here goes

So i have come to the educated descision 2 days ago i need to get healthier, one step at a time. So Monday night i had my last cigarette. Gone from 20 a day to 0. I came to the conclusion that between me and the missus we spend close to £3500 a year on cigarettes as we are both doing this first and foremost we will be healthier and live longer but we will save around £350 a month which is over half the mortgage !!!!!

Anyone else stopped smoking, was wondering what the hardest part was so far its not the lack of cigarettes (yet) its the routine when i am bored, oh there is nothing to do so i will go have a cigarette and chat with some guys i work with !!!

Glad your unhooked from the cancer sticks.

Unless its this kind of smoking

. No good for your wallet, great for your health.

The most important thing I think is wanting to give up.

The physical addiction passes quite quickly (a week or 2).

I found that once I had decided I wanted to give up (many years ago now), it was very easy and I never looked back.

You sound like you've decided - just don't change your mind. I don't miss it at all and I'm never tempted.

Good luck!

Good luck. Once you've done it, don't assume that you can have the odd one. I gave up for four years and for some stupid reason had one on a whim and then started again.

You'll never be a non-smoker you'll be a smoker who doesn't smoke. You need to always work at it is what I'm saying.

My grandfather started smoking at 6. Had as many as possible including up to a pack and a half a day. He stopped cold turkey at 35 after nearly 30 years of daily smoking. No patches or gum except wanting to be healthy for his family.

He held a cigarette in his pocket or hand for a while after he quit. And used his family as motivation. Good luck!! Maybe get the gum or patch or in the mall ive seen fake cigarettes that are suppose to help.

Smoked 20+ a day for over 20 years until 1st Jan 2007.

Haven't even had a drag since, I went cold turkey but didn't find it that bad. I worked on the principle (and still do) that if I have one I'll finish the pack so if I don't have that one....

I found the first few weeks weird, the day was twice as long without the punctuation of cigarette breaks, and I slept very badly.

Unpalatable truths are that I put on weight that I have never lost despite being pretty fit, and I had a lot of gum problems strangely enough.

Best thing you'll ever do if you manage it, the feeling of superiority over the muppets freezing to death outside the pub is 50% of it for me, and the cash saved is the other half!

Might sound weird but I didn't really give up on health grounds, but I definitely think hangovers are easier.

Good luck

It will be worth it in the long run not just health wise but also financially as well.

The first week will be the hardest once you get past that it will get easier the good thing is you and the missus are both quiting at the same time so you can both give each other a bit of encouragement when and if any one of you is struggling a bit.

You will soon be able to smell things a lot better and you will be able to really taste your food, your clothes wont stink etc.

Another good thing is the smoking ban, as now when your in the pub etc. it will not be in your face anymore which should also make it a bit easier.

Even when you've been quit for a while you may get the smell of a cig and crave it even years after you have quit, i had it a few times but now its not a problem.

Good luck.........

I did the same - cold turkey and didn't find it too bad either. Could still smoke in pubs then too which should have made it harder. Stupid to start again after all that time - now I've got to do it all again....

I quit smoking cigarettes, it was a nasty habit. It was hard at first and now I cant stand people around me who smoke.

You were paying far too much for cigs! You need the ones you don't pay any duty on.

Fair enough if you want to quit then go ahead and good luck.

Do it for you though because you want to which is what I will do if I so choose.

Don't for gods sake become one of those extremely irritating reformed smokers PLEASE!!

Good on yer for deciding to quit mate!

I quit my 30 a day habit in November 2007, cold turkey.
I agree with what everyone above has said - all true, especially the putting on weight comment! ha ha.

The 2 cigarettes I still miss to this day are:

1) when I get in the car in the evening to drive home from work
2) when my mrs shouts me that my tea is nearly ready! (weird one I know)

I keep chewing gum in the car and grab one as soon as I get in it, I even get a bit irate if I haven't got any and have to stop to buy some!

As has already been said, you need to find something to fill the time you used to spend smoking and it's easier said than done. Thinking about the money is a good motivator, for sure.

Good luck with it matey

With those muscles I'm hardly surprised he 'smokes' furiously. Needs to try some lube I reckon.

best of luck with this, I wish my GF would do the same! Having another holiday a year instead of her getting cancer would be good :-)

I know people that can have the odd one, I am utterly totally not one of those people, glass of wine = the bottle, drag of marlboro light = back to 30+ a day.
