I've recently driven a Scirocco R which, apart from being 2wd, is virtually the same (though that's a pretty fundamental difference!). Thought it was great, DSG seemed good, but I'd crave a manual after a short while I reckon but the DSG seems the most popular choice. Loved the interior of the Scirocco, but think the Golf is slightly less special (almost like an E90 vs E92 comparison - E92 being a bit more 'wrapped-round' IMO). When buying new I don't think the R was worth the premium over a GTI but on the used market a much better buy - the 4wd obviously sapping the mpg somewhat over the 2wd GTI/Scirocco R.

I think there are better cars to spend £80,000,000,000,000 on.
OK, I might be exaggerating, but my point is that (although it's a good car) the Golf R is stupidly expensive. You'd be better off buying a Golf Edition 30 and coating it in real gold leaf. Then buying a house. Or two houses. Then have yourself a slap up meal. And some wine. Then more wine. There is definitely a constructive message in there somewhere. Matt |

Probably better off asking that question over here:
http://www.rforum.co.uk/index.php?PH...d0f1a4f8a96f8& There are quite expensive compared to what else is out there although the later models did get a few more extras as std (Leather + Bluetooth) also with the launch of the Golf MK 7 the new R isn't far away so they will probably depreciate fairly rapid when that's launched I had one for a couple of months last year and preferred the Scirocco R although the 4WD is probably more practical in the winter months there quite a quick Car and with launch Control very impressive 0-60 times if you want same sort of performance but in a different guise you'll get more for your Money with Audi's S3.

Wow! How come you never used the R? If anything, that's a big indicator! If you where not drawn to drive a brand new R, must be something wrong with the car.
That is also an insane amount of time to sell a car. Congrats! |

Well done on the quick sale.
There is quite a few in the classifieds. Certainly as many as there is similar aged 335i or M3. I just can't see how a Golf R is worth more than a 335i, but yes depreciation is low. There seems to be a massive following of VW/Audi on DW and the likes and the way they go on about their cars and can't see past anything with a VAG badge borders on scary. It does seem to be that VW have a reputation way beyond their means. I've always considered the BMW brand above that of VW, however it seems that many don't. I just don't get where the enthusiasm for them comes from as they are nothing amazing. |

I've owned 2 of them. First a 3 door and now a 5 door.
One of the best, if not THE best cars I've owned, and I count numerous Audi's BMW's and Mercs in that. Its just such a flexible engine. Put it in D and its happy cruising around. Put it in S and its damn quick. Also has 4WD so the grip is superb. Handling with the optional dynamic chassis is very good. Without it, the ride is on the firm side. Probably on a par to an E90 with Runflats. I'm waiting for the Mk7 R but to beat the Mk6 it has some way to go. I should add as well... When I traded in the 3 door, its the only car where I've ever had equity in it.. And that was at 15 months into a 3 year PCP. I got a PX value just 2.5K less than I paid for it 15 months earlier. |

I nearly bought one new instead of the 335i. Very very nice cars, very few around (hence low depreciation) and definatly more classy/diserable than a S3. The car I was going to buy was going to cost £33k, the dealer wouldn't move a penny on the price, in the end I simply couldn't justify >£30k on a Golf when for similar money I could have got a barely used S4/335i.
Don't know what prices are like now but looking back I'm glad I went with the 335i, so much more car than the Golf! |

I configured one online yesterday, lovely sounding car, bet it'll be a belter. Oddly I couldn't spec the larger 19" alloys & panoramic sunroof together - obviously a glitch (unless the added weight buckles the alloys LOL).

I've driven nearly ever generation GTi, R32, VR6 etc (not driven an R so my post is completely irrelevant really). None have given me that fizz or involuntary goofy grin that you get. I guess i just don't get them, it doesn't mean they are bad cars.

I'm not saying they are bad cars either.
They are good cars but the way VW drivers go on you think VW was the only car that exists. On DW every recommend me a car thread always revolves around VW even if the person wanted a 2 seater supercar. Last time I checked out the prices of the MK7, the 1.4tsi GT with leather, sat nav, dsg, 18" wheels and metallic paint was in excess of £30k! The R is nothing special to drive either. I've never understood devotion to a brand and I've never understood how especially 2nd hand values can be so driven out of proportion. |

The price of cars, in general, is a rip off IMO. When a Hyundai with decent amount of spec can cost £19-20k - then it's only right to expect a GTi to start in the mid to late 20's.
In regards to the R - depreciation elements to one side, I think the Edition 35 with a re-map would be a better option. The 4WD system is great and gives you a safety net. A planted feeling; but in my opinion, it zaps some of the enjoyment away from the car. Much like the Audi S's. I've had 2 Mk5's now. The first was only a year old (after release) so I kept it basic to keep within my budget at the time. 17's, manual, cloth seats etc. I loved it to bits. I sandwiched 2 330d's in between the one I have now, which is the DSG version and loaded with options. For £5,800 - I just couldn't ignore the trader advert. I initially bought it for 6-8 months until I found something else - but it's been 14 months now and I still don't want to part with it. |

Niche cars like the R are limited in Supply (Artificially in some cases) and that drives stronger residuals than a common TDI SE. |

Plenty GTis are available and more than enough R models too. Plenty of sister S3s too. Anyone can walk into their local dealer and buy one. I understand the desire of a Ferrari, Bugatti but VW? It isn't really that much of a niche market. There is quite a few alternative hot hatchbacks out there including a few that are better to drive which is the point of a hot hatch. There is enough Rs in the classified with the latest used model still at £35k and a new convertible for £37.3k. They aren't that good to drive, they aren't that fast and they aren't any better looking than many of the other hatchbacks. It is only in the last few years that VW reputation has soared and I personally don't get it. Last edited by Kerr; 04-24-2013 at 10:01 AM.. |
