Changing gears to the E90
After 14 years with my E39 M5 and a long time on the M5Board, I have decided to keep the M5 and found a low mileage 2010 328i Barbera Red to use as my DD. I don't miss shifting gears in traffic and putting on new PS2s every 12,000 miles, and the E90 has a good ride. You hear all kinds of stories about the E39 M5s being money pits, but mine has done well so far and is approaching 162,000 miles with the original rod bearings.
It's not hype, nothing drives like a BMW. I test drove an E60 M5 and a 550 and they were just too big and I didn't think I could live with 12 mpg, but I do love the sound of the V10 in the high revs. While I was at the dealer a lady came in with the E90 and I saw it and made the dealer an offer. They changed the oil and gave it the spa treatment and I was on my way last month. Probably the shortest time a trade ever sat on their lot! I have the Bimmerzone spare tire in the M5 and want to get one for the 328. I'm looking forward to the mpgs on the 328, the good ride, even with the sport package and doing some long distance drives to visit my daughter in Colorado. Does anyone have a picture of the Bimmerzone spare in the trunk of the 328i? I've always felt if you love to drive, it's hard to beat a BMW. |

My relationship the last few years with the M5 has been a love/hate one. I've used the Bimmerzone spare twice, it's on it's third windshield, and except for thermostats (three), and the HVAC blower resistor (two), it's been very reliable. I'm debating doing the rod bearings at 190k. I did a safelite windshield after a rock star and the rain sensor didn't work and they didn't use the BMW seal kit. It was loud at speed without the BMW seal kit. On the next one insurance was good about and let me go to BMW for an OEM. The VANOS has become noisier but quiets down after it warms up - wasn't like that when new. Oh yes, and changing the plugs on it is a major knuckle buster, but the performance is amazing. I have a storehouse of the Castrol Edge 10w - 60w oil and I change it myself every 5000 miles. It gets 13 mpg city and 23 highway. I love the Michelin PS2s and so does the Beast, it goes through them regularly but it makes it a totally different car from the Contis or Duns. I'm thinking of going with the Michelins on the 328i.

Bringing it home from the dealer. The 2000 has on outdated nav, but to upgrade to the 2001 nav is in the area of $3000 if you can find the parts now. 2000 was the last year of the "classic front lights" as dealers call them. Oh yes, I had the pixel repair issue on the instrument cluster in 2009 and BMW gave me a new cluster at no charge, even though it was out of warranty. Thank you Autohaus!

I like the tie down straps and cover on that spare. Thanks for posting. I didn't even know I had the xenons on my E90. Thanks too for posting that!
