Plain mirror

I have a plain mirror with no extras. I ordered the retrofit kit from Tischer and got a mirror off ebay with home link and auto dim.

I started the DIY today and when I removed the mirror I noticed I have no connector or wires going to the mirror.

The Tischer kit I received only has 5 wires and a brown ground wire.

Does anyone know if I need a new retro kit with more wires?

Thanks

You should have a connector because your alarm light is terminated through it. The only reason it might not be there is the original mirror could have been replaced with a plain one and who ever switched it out took the original 4 wire harness. This can only be true if you bought a used car.

The car is brand new 10 miles on the odometer. Any other ideas?

Please somebody help me…

I started the retrofit of the compass/homelink rear-view mirror some time ago. Harness from Tischer, mirror from eBay. After finishing installation, seatbelt and airbag light indicators went off. Also the sunroof and lights do not work. Checked connections and all seem ok.

Checked with BT tool and it cannot communicate with the FZD. It does not respond.

I am embarrassed to say that I forgot to disconnect car battery during mirror install. Perhaps that made the FZD go bad, I thought.

Then I hooked up another FZD module I got on eBay and same result.

Does anybody have any pointers on what to do next? I took it to the dealership and they quoted $1000 for FZD replacement. But I am sure they simply saw that FZD was not responding and assumed that a bad FZD was the problem (bad FZD MAY be the problem if the one I got on eBay was also bad).

Does anybody can give any pointers on what to try next? Do I need to reset any other module or do anything else to activate the FZD module? Or is it supposed to work, plug-and-play?

Thank you for this! I just ordered a retrofit harness yesterday and my SA had never heard of this and was "confused" when I had a part number for him. Hope to do the install next week, looks very straight forward.

Literally just finished this, thanks for the DIY. Absolutely the hardest part was getting the FZD out and I've been working on cars for 30 odd years....I went with the small screwdriver method along with some plastic prybars (a must have when working on interiors IMO).

Just a note : my retrofit kit GR/VI wire was more of a light blue/violet. I just did a process of elimination with the other wires.

Happy to not have an opener on my visor anymore, Homelink was one of the options I wanted when looking for a car but choices were limited for Crimson Red unfortunately.

Only other thing I would add is definitely buy it from Tischer, I bought my kit locally and they charged substantially more (I should have asked, I just ordered it).

I have an '07 328 w/ sport/premium. I believe that "premium" is supposed to come with Homelink but it is not there. This car has auto-dip mirror AND side mirrors. Looking at RealOEM, it reads kind of like cars with auto-dip side mirrors cannot fit Homelink. I also don't have the alarm right now but I'm thinking about retrofitting it.

Has anyone successfully managed to get the works functioning in an E90? (clown nose, auto-dip rear, auto-dip side, compass, homelink)

Thanks,

Success!!!

Thanks for the great write up!

I have a 2009 e90 with no premium package, so my rear view mirror had nothing. I ordered a mirror (homelink, autodim, compass) off of www.car-part.com (got a great deal, was much less than ebay) and the retrofit wire (61120434330) from Evan @ tischer.

The instructions from this DIY and the referenced BMW pdf were greaet. The hardest part for me was removing the FZD. I used the technique referenced on this Bluetooth DIY to remove the FZD

Any help people? Do I need to put in a fuse or something? I cannot get the mirror to work, and I checked and rechecked all the connections.

My car didnt come with premium package.

No help, again I have a car that didn't have premium. I plugged in everything based on the DIY and everyones suggestions. The mirror 100% works, tested it into another BMW.

Also, I only have the 4 plugs plugged into the connector, since the car didnt come with premium. This is frustrating, any help?

I have a 2008 E92 335i, which only had the sport package, but no premium. No bluetooth, nav, assist, or autodimming. I recently ordered an auto-dimming rear view mirror with homelink (no compass), from ebay. I also ordered the wiring kit from Tischer. I followed the DIY and other than a few unclear directions, it went smoothly and everything works fine. If anything I would say there might be a break in one of the wires, or the wires are in the wrong pin locations in the harness? I know for sure sometimes I mess up really easy stuff like that for no good reason.

I would also like to add a few things to the DIY that need clarification. While the directions are pretty clear in the first post, I did not see an illustration of where the wires should go in the harness on the windshield side of things until I got further down the thread. Also, the link to the PDF no longer works. It would probably help to update the post with this information. Also, the wiring connector inside the FZD that you need to remove should be a little more clear than the "second one". It is the 20 pin connector located 2nd from the drivers side of the FZD (if you aren't counting the mic connector.).

Other than that, great write up, I took my time and was careful and I got it done in under an hour.

Need coding?

Hey guys. I finally had time to get this wired up in my 328i. The compass works and the homelink works, albeit it's not programmed. Unfortunately it looks like the autodimming is not working. It looks like in the instructions that it requires some coding from the dealer. Did anyone else have to do that?

Thanks!

EC must work without coding the car.
Your mirror is broken or not properly installed.

I assume you have tried it with the ignition switched on and the 'R' gear NOT engaged, right?

Coding is requiered if you have outer EC mirrors too or you want it disconnected when R gear is engaged.

Thanks for the quick reply. When I checked it last night it didn't appear to be working. I drove around my neighborhood to check the compass and it was working great. I covered my hand over the light sensor and it did not appear to dimm. When I drove to work this morning I had some jerk who was riding by rear. Fortunately the mirror started working; there was a big difference between the rear and the side mirrors.

To the guy who put this thread together, it's awesome, thanks!

Success

Just installed my homelink mirror -- the DIY was really helpful.

1) I had previously replaced my overhead console and got it out the 'hard way' using strategically placed screwdrivers. Removing the visor catch screws was much easier. I wish I had known this the first time!

2) The 'straw trick' worked great.

3) Getting the fabric tape off the end of the rubber grommet was kind of pain. Mainly done just by picking at it.

4) Getting the mirror end connector open was kind of tricky -- even with the great picture. I wound up using a jewelers screwdriver inserted in the middle of the 'bottom' of the connector to simultaneous release the latches on either side.

5) I feel kind of stupid for saying this -- but I didn't know the pins weren't symmetric -- but that one side has a 'clip' to lock it in place once inserted. This clip must go on the outside of the connector. I realized this only when I had trouble getting the first pin to go in.

6) Calibrating the compass is done by sticking something sharp into the 'hole' (not really a button) on the bottom of the mirror.

Overall took about 1:15 (including calibration and programming). Without this DIY, it would have taken me much longer.

DIY: The final Homelink retrofit guide missing PDF link

I am in the process of doing this retrofit and in doing my homework to prepare I found that the link to the wiring PDF is no longer working.

Can anyone direct me to or send me the wiring diagram? I understand it not the best but its better than nothing.

The drawing that dukeandtheland provides in the post comments is good for the mirror wiring but I still need the console side

I would also like to say the this DIY is very informative and well done.

Thanks for any help.
