The valve only becomes useless if you eliminate the h pipe.

Getting it done today. Replacing perforated pipes with straight pipes, keeping packing the same.

First shop said no because they claimed they'd burn a hole in the muffler with their MIG welder.

Second shop said no because they only had a stick welder

Third shop says ok and it's sitting over there now.

Good Luck. Thanks for trying it out. Let us know how it goes and if you could take vids and pics that would be great!

I wonder how much of a difference there would be by just removing the packing...

Removing all of it is stupid.

Removing half of would probably sound nice

I read a thread in the Z4 section where a guy took out all of the packing and he said that it didn't make any difference.

I couldn't take pics of the work being done, but here's the gist of what the muffler guy told me.

I'm assuming he didn't have a plasma torch and so cutting/welding new pipes in was a no-go due to spacial constraints. So I opted to have the packing removed mostly. I had him take out about 75% of the packing and leave the rest as-is.

The big news to me was that there was no packing in the driver-side muffler at all. Was this previously known? Because I did not expect it

Brief review until I can get video:
It's quieter than I expected, in retrospect I would have removed all of it. But it does sound good. From in the cabin its not much louder than what it was before (catless dps, stock exhaust), but on the road with the windows down it sounds awesome. I'd venture to say it sounds a lot like the PE exhaust I see in the videos, just from a different perspective as I'm sitting in the car.

Definitely worth the mod as it sounds a lot more throaty and more exotic sounding but not too overbearing.

If I were to do it again, I'd remove all the packing.

I'll post vids soon, probably after tomorrow as I've got to do a plug swap (Cobb install is giving me misfires on cyl 2).

I can see how that's possible if the z4 has exhaust restrictions elsewhere. Did he have dps or resonator somewhere?

So was just checking something, and I think that the exhaust flap is closed. I had set the JB4 to map 0 when doing the Cobb flash. I didnt realize the map 0 sets the canflap mode back to stock. I'll have to try it out again tomorrow. I've not yet removed the JB4 since its a pinout harness and a total PITA.

If I read correctly all you did was remove 75% of packing as you couldn't change perforated to solid pipe, correct? Either way, can't wait to hear it.

Yup. 75% packing removed. And upon opening, there was no packing in the driver-side muffler (the one with the mini resonator). The welder guy said that he would have had to cut top and bottom open on both sides to cut the perforated pipe and then weld a solid pipe in due to spacial constraints. That would have cost a lot more and I was trying to keep the hacking-up of stock parts to a minimum.

Videos done. No WOT yet due to the plug issue, but I am stitching together something now.

I don't think so.

Anyway, your exhaust sounds really great. When you let off the pedal, I noticed a lot of gurgling. I would probably have removed 100% of the packing as well, but you didn't know how it would come out, so I understand.

How much did this cost you, if you don't mind me asking?
