Strange lights?
I recently got my car lowered on kw coilovers a couple of weeks ago, as well as had all 4 wheels balanced. I am running 12.5mm spacers in the rear, and none in the front. Everything has been fine until yesterday.
While cruising along yesterday, all of a sudden the "BRAKE" and little dsc light illuminated in the dash both in yellow. A little exclamation mark in a circle surrounded by parantheses came on the display and goes away after 10 seconds, but the other 2 lights stay on. Now, I know if the "brake" lights up in red, it means you need to replace brake fluid. It's yellow though. The manual says "drive off assistant has failed. the car will not be held in place after the brake is released." What is this? It then went away after I turned the car off for a while and then started it back up. Then it came back on this morning after starting the car up and moving a couple of blocks down the road. At a stoplight, I turned the car off, and restarted it back up again. The lights went away, and I havent seen them all afternoon (i've been driving the car all day, almost 100 miles). Anybody ever had this scenario happen with these specific lights?

If you're on a hill, the car will hold the brake to keep the car from rolling back. It seems an accelerometer has failed. It uses it for DSC and drive off assist.

Same exact thing is happening to me. Trying to figure it out, that combination of lights is still coming on for me, once every 3 weeks or so roughly. I have everything hooked up correctly and no other lights showing. Similar setup as the OP

I am under the impression it is a fualty brake or angle steering sensor. Really wont know until I take all my mods off and go to the dealership.

If it's a wheel speed sensor, you'd also have an ABS warning. If it's the steering angle sensor, your turn signals won't auto-cancel when return the wheel to center.

This is great info! My turn signals DO NOT self cancel when the steering wheel goes back to being centered. 99% sure what the problem is now. Hopefully bmw will change it out quick and cover it.

If all it is is the SAS (steering angle sensor) and indy shop will re calibrate it for about $80 and you don't need to remove mods
However it sounds like yours may need cleaning/or broken since you havent just replaced your steering wheel. |

Well I have been driving around for a couple of days now since I posted this thread up, and the lights have not come back on *knocks on wood*. Started the car plenty of times and driven to a bunch of different places, but no lights come on like before. Very strange

its due to the fact that in the clock spring behind the steering wheel there is an infrared laser eye like in cd players and dvd players.
There is gunk on it and the next time it shifts and disturbs the lasers vision you will get the lights and errors again. Just needs to be cleaned or throw in a new clock spring. inexpensive part. I promise you this is the reason your getting issues... here is the DIY fix: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=520467 |

So after 8-9 months later, 10,000+ miles of no light, another light randomly came on. This time the "brake" light is illuminated in yellow again, the DSC light comes on like ive just turned traction control fully off, and the same exclamation point light surrounded by parenthesis shows up in the middle display (between the tach and speedometer). This center display light also shows a new light....the traction control off symbol followed by an exclamation point. In the manual, it says "suspension control failure" or something like that. Anybody have an explanation or an idea? My car's steering is fine and so is the suspension? I did just have the brakes done about 3 weeks ago (new pads, rotors, fluid, and sensors both front+rear , and fluid is still full, so the brake light is false?
Basically, it came on monday, i parked the car, then when i started it back up and drove it, it came on again, so i parked the car again and it didnt come on for days. Drove the car a lot and no lights came back. Then last night 4 days after it initially came on monday, and after i had got the car aligned by a local indy shop i use, the light comes back on. on my way to work this morning.....no light. I dont get it! This is frustrating lol. Last edited by Stucks; 04-27-2012 at 10:02 AM.. |

Sounds like a wheels speed sensor. Is the ABS light on? Suspension control failure doesn't make sense. A dead wheels speed sensor will cause all of those lights.

Hmm... You still have abs but no DSC. Get the car scanned for codes. That will tell you the problem. Are your turn signals not canceling when you center your wheel like before?

Well i drove the car the whole weekend (150+ miles) and it didnt come on once.... going to have the car scanned for codes later today to try and see if maybe something is in there that could indicate what was wrong with it

I got it diagnosed today. It is the steering angle sensor. 700 bucks to switch it out and code the new sensor is not going to be pretty.
