Today, I was driving home from work and it was pouring rain like you couldn't even believe. I went for a right turn at a red light at an intersection where there are usually never any cars. Always knowing that there are no cars at the intersection, I usually brake at about 10 miles per hour and make the right turn. Unfortunately there was a pretty deep puddle that I didn't see and it looked like pavement while it was pouring rain. The water carried my car over to the curb. The front tire went up on the curb without the back tire, but I was able to get the car back on the road. My right lower side skirt fell off. Thank God no one was around because it probably could have gotten pretty ugly. There is also some structural damage on the car aside from the missing side skirt. At the time, it was too late to call the BMW Collision Center to schedule an estimate for the damage. I was looking to see if anyone has had an experience with an accident like this. How expensive was the cheap? Did you pay a deductible to your insurance because the repair cost was expensive? I have a feeling that the damage is going to be pricy, but i surely appreciate any insight. I'm curious about the road I'm about to go down. Pictures down below....

your better off buying a side skirt and calling it a day, you can find one used or new for under 200$ i imagine GL

It drives perfectly well. It was fine yesterday while coming back home from work and this morning going to work. I also checked a second time under the car and there was no other damage besides from what I mentioned and what's in the pictures.

No way. I've been taking the same route from work everyday for about three and a half years and no one is ever at the light, but I should have been extra careful this time because of the downpour.

It's actually much worse than people are mentioning. You've damaged the frame. This is a structural part that is critical in an accident. If you get into another accident that is severe like a frontal offset crash or a side impact, that area of the uni-body has to be structurally sound. I'm afraid it's going to be a quite a repair and one that you're going to have to get your insurance involved.

That patch of the rocker panel needs to be repaired properly as the poster above me said. It's a structural component.

I'm sorry but am I the only one that sees something wrong with this? The person clearly states that it was RAINING and that he was making a right on a red light with his car not completely stopped. Even when it's not raining you're supposed to come to a conplete stop for at least 3 secs before proceeding to make your turn. The person clearly did not do any of this, for whatever reason. Now can you imagine if there was another car passing by? He would've jeopardized someelse's life not just his side skirt.

I work for a body shop and that part is not part of the frame
put a side skirt over it and be done with it
I have been rebuilding collision cars for years and trust me what you have there is nothing to worry about.

what does rolling a right turn have to do with the damage incurred?

Glad you're safe and no one was on the road at the time. Doesn't seem too bad. I'm sure you can buy a sideskirt, paint it and throw it on. However, if you're worried about your frame and nothing cosmetic, I'd call and get a quote.

Just out of interest, where did you pull that "3 second stop at at a red light before turning right" rule from? You didn't even ask the OP what jurisdiction he was in to see what rule would actually apply to the right-on-red situation.

I'm pretty certain that if there had been another car coming through the intersection, the OP (and most other drivers) would not have turned right in front of such a vehicle. You make it seem as though we are all lucky the OP's rash actions didn't cause the Earth to stop spinning on its axis...

in driver training we are taught to stop for a count of 3, as this will give you time to check traffic from both directions, and check for pedestrians. It is not the law.

Id put claim in with your insurrance because if you take it too bmw collision center it will set you back most likely 1500-2000$. For side skirt and repairing that metal damage. Let us know what they qoute you, im interested.
