According to Bimmerfile, it has been confirmed that the 135i and 335i will be receiving the N55 engine.
The 335i and 135i will get the N55 for the 2011 year/this Spring with an 8 speed transmission/start stop option. The 335is will remain with the N54 (assuming along with the Z4 sDrive35is and 740i/li) and have an option for DCT.

No word on what the rumored 135is/M1 will use.

I know several discussion threads exist on this topic at the rumor level, but this looks to be confirmed. This also tells me that the single turbo engine won't be easily tuned to make more power as the is models still retain the N54.

I'm so glad I got my 09 335i sedan. Newer body style, better engine IMO, and tune-ability. I highly think that since the n54 is staying in the more "performance" minded bimmers then that only signifies that the n55 is going to be lackluster compared to the n54

So in short our options for 2011 as far as the 3 series are:

335i - N55 - 6MT or 8AT
335is - Tuned N54 - 7DCT

Tough choice since my lease is up in March 2011 and I will be looking at a 2011 3 series

From my readings, no. First, the turbine is twin-scroll which can be a challenge to replicate, and second, the turbine housing also has some other engine parts included (like a diverter valve). BMW seems to not want this engine tuned...

I'm sure bmw put a lot more precautions in place to prevent the ecu from being hacked without detection after what they've seen happen with the N54. Lets not forget about the valvetronic system as well.

I have heard crap like that before from manufacturers, tuners always seem to find their way past it. They said that about some of the new audis and hasn't stopped the tuners.

Problems like the HPFP won't help resale.

There are already e90 335i's online under $20k, with 50-60k miles. Used prices will not increase.

When BMW's run out of warranty, their prices plummet.

Agreed. It seems BMW is trying to shelter the Valvetronic system, hence the N54 being tuned for higher output in the IS models. Disappointing, really. BMW really could have created a legacy if they had kept Valvetronic out of the N55. Big single kits would have been easy.

BMW doesn't look to build engines for hot rodders. They build what works best for their bread and butter 3 series target market-an efficient motor that provides good power and fuel mileage. Cars that have more zip for when Muffy and Chad go to Trader Joe's or Wegman's.

Plus with people modding in their warranty, it's a smart business decision to protect themselves. Things that blow up may not be related to a mod, but why deal with it when they can limit the capability from the get go.

Really, I think they could stay twin-turbo and add Valvetronic and 8-speed transmission and obtain the same mileage.

The fact that the iS models and the upcoming M3 will be twin-turbo tells something...

You are correct at 100%, guarantee that ams will come out with turbo kit for N55 before the N54.
