HELP!! Radiator cooling fan going full blast (loud!!)

So this morning I cranked up my e92 335i and headed to work as usual (short commute... 5-7 mins). As I was getting closer to work, I could hear a loud noise around me but I thought it was Diesel truck in front of me. When I pulled in to the parking lot I realized it was my car, but there is no reason the fan should be blowing this fast if the temp gauge had barely even moved in my short commute. I had the same thing happen on the way back home, no codes or warnings of any kind in the dash.

So I've searched the forum and other sites, but I am not 100% sure what it could be. it sounds like the water pump might have failed according to a couple of posts with very similar symptoms, which sucks because I'm out of warranty (79k miles).

so...has anyone had this happen to them? does anyone know what it could be? would a regular ODB (autozone, O'Rilley's free scan) reader get the code or does it have to be a BMW specific??

I have a feeling I'll probably have to take it to the dealer to get the code or a proper diagnostic, but I'm definitely not letting them fix it, whatever it is. I hope it is not very expensive... this is horrible timing.. my wife is expecting twins less than 5 weeks away.

Thanks,

Aldo

Aldo, first of all congratulations for the twins and best wishes. In the big scheme of things, don't worry about the car, you got something way more important and exciting going on in your life. But have another car ready when you have to rush to hospital.

It would seem to me that either water pump or thermostat or the engine coolant temperature sensor is intermittently failing. You would need a BMW specific reader to pull the hidden codes. Since they are intermittent and not completely failed, they may not throw the check engine light on, which a normal code reader at Autozone etc may be able to read. Best thing would be take to an indy or ask around if someone has a code reader (eg. Bavarian Technic). If it is water pump, it would throw a speed deviation code. If you do change the water pump, do the thermostat at the same time. Pump is expensive (about $450-500) and thermostat is about $100.

Thanks man I appreciate it..!! I was just in shock when I saw the prices for the water pumps. I've replaced the one on my wife's X3 before and it was an easy and rather inexpensive job. I've never had to pay $500+ for a water pump, so hopefully that's not what it is.. I'm not too excited about paying all that money right now.

On a second note, I took a longer way to work this morning and the water temperature warning light did come on and the car did go into full limp mode. I'm having it checked out at lunch time by a place over here by work that does work on German cars. We'll see....

thanks,

Aldo

Unfortunately, it sounds like your water pump has gone bad.

so indeed it was the water pump. I'm getting it replaced along with the thermostat, My brother works for a repair shop and he can get parts for cheaper and we are going to try to do it ourselves. so we're looking at around $675.00 for parts alone and we'll do the labor.

thanks for the help!

There's an upgraded pump, for the 1M and 335is, that fits your car, you might want to look into.

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-27...5-engines.aspx

And you might replace the oil filter housing gasket if you have not done so already, since the coolant will be out.

seems like i'm dealing with a similar issue on mine at the moment... did you end up doing the water pump yourself? I am pretty mechanically inclined and feel like I could probably handle it but wondered if you actually ended up doing it urself?

Hello Friends
I have a 2011 X3 Xdrive 28i, it is about a week that i noticed the radiator fan runs very fast and loud only when I turn on the AC otherwise without AC on it works just fine.
Any help and suggestion will be appreciated.
