Exclamation facelift 2009 3-series to get updated iDrive system

source: BIMMERFILE
Quote:

The 2009 model year is shaping up to be a big year for the 3er. We’ve known for awhile that the 3 Series would get its mid life-cycle refresh in 2009. Historically at BMW that includes a mildly refreshed exterior and interior along with a host of small mechanical and technology improvements. However one of the bigger changes inside the car (and one that BMW has been able to keep secret until now) will be a substantially updated iDrive system that includes a completely new interface. The new design is closer to Audi’s MMI system in that there are a host of small buttons that allow the user to quickly jump to different parts of the system. What is not seen here is that BMW will also be including a small dial on the steering wheel that allows the user to scroll quickly through long lists (seen here yesterday in the new 7).

Looking back at the new interface design pictured, it remains unclear whether or not the knob will still rotate or if the outter ring will. However what we do know is that the new interface as a whole (including that steering wheel thumb scroll) was designed to allow the user fly through data at a much faster pace.

The new system will debut at the Paris Motor Show late this summer in the new 7 Series before bowing in the updated 3.

As previously reported expect several other key changes to the E90. First and foremost the front and rear fascia will be updated. Secondly the interior design as a whole will be slightly tweaked. Mechanically expect the biggest news to come from a new optional DCT (dual clutch transmission) and a special sport model similar to the ZHP package offered on the E46. It’s this sport model that could see the debut of an up-rated 3.0L turbo that currently powers the 335i.

The E90 3 Series sedan will be the first of the current generation to receive it’s customary mid-cycle refresh. Look for the coupe, convertible (and to a lesser extent M3 since it’s exterior design is generally left along) to get the same updates almost a year after the sedan.

I wonder if the steering wheel gizmo is optional. Some fool's gonna be spinning through their iPod instead of watching the road.

I really doubt it. Even if you could, the cost wouldn't be worth it.

Thumbs up

Looks like this is the ZHP model or (M-Sport)

The parking brake has perforated leather that matches the perforated "M" steering wheel and the trim is the Aluminum Cube from the previous ZHP.

This is exactly why I decided to wait. I'm hoping to get a coupe with DCT and updated Idrive.

Doesn't specify when we'll see the DCT. But if I have to wait til 2010, I might end up getting the sedan if they come out with the ZHP package for 2009. And also curious whether the 135 will get these options.

Decisions, decisions

So as I see it there is a single button to get you to tele, CD, Radio, etc right next to the wheel. If that's the case along with the scroll on the steering wheel for iPod or phone lists, I would say that's alot of enhancements which I'm sure all tie into the new MyInfo. What's the button below the tele say?

Wow this is great news, thank god I will not be the one fucked this time. I bought the 06 330i then the 335i came out in 07, now the BS has been spread evenly to the 335i owners with the DCT in 09. No offense I'm just kidding all. With so much competition technology wise, cars are ever changing in today's present marketplace.

+1 the knob function is probably totally different. Not to mention you have to retrofit the trim around it.

I'm guessing it says "Nav". $hit my eyes hurt now.

I have mixed feelings about the added buttons on the wheel and console. I definitely applaud the more "user friendly" quick access buttons, but I think they could have left out a few. Now it looks like an Audi console with tons of buttons around everywhere and I personally find it more distracting.

How many buttons on that thing? It looks like a step backwards to me. Despite it's many shortcomings, the one sound design decision that BMW made with the current iDrive is that you don't have to take your eyes off the road to operate it. With this version, you would end up looking down to see which button to press.

I do agree that overall the UI does need an overhaul, but this looks like a move in the wrong direction. We'll have to trust that they know what they're doing...

first look is cool...but why would you need every button for every option on the iDrive menu??
