I know that I got significantly more than $1,500 when I traded my mine in for the E90. Ed

I bought my wrx new in '02 and still have it. It's a little over 10yrs old now and it's probably worth more to me than to sell it. I have a bunch of mods on it and still plan on doing more to it. I'm buying my e90 and plan on keeping it for a while.

1990 VW Cabriolet: 2 years then traded in due to first child.
1991 Jeep Cherokee: Sold in 2001 with 175k Miles. Had to push this across the border in TJ when the radiator blew out after a weekend in Ensenada. 1988 BMW M3: Bought this one from a Frau in Erlangen while stationed in Germany in 1996. 1998 Volvo S70 GLT: Scrapped in 2011 with 165k Miles. Made two trips overseas and probably seen more of Europe than 99% of Americans. 2001 Volvo V70 GLT: Sold in 2003. 2004 Volvo XC-70: Sold in 2007. 2007 Volvo XC-90: 4 years then traded in (horrible vehicle) and decided I wasn’t Volvo for life. Picked it up in Sweden. Drove great for a year, but had nothing but problems thereafter. 2011 Audi Q5: wife’s car. So far 19 months and counting. Transport for the dog 2011 BMW 328i: my car. So far 20 months and counting. I’ll drive this one for at least 150k. |

1996 Ford Ranger: Bought new April 1997. Sold December 1998.
1999 Dodge Dakota: Factory order, took delivery December 1998. Sold June 2001. 2000 E46 323i: Bought New September 2000, Traded September 2012. 2007 Lexus RX350: Bought Demo (never titled) February 2007. Probably keep it 10 years. 2011 E90 335d: Bought Demo (never titled) September 2012. Probably keep it 10-12 years. So early on, it was 18 months or so. Now I've wised up, and am going 10-12 years. Could have kept the E46 longer--nothing wrong with it aside from some sagging c-pillar trim and 20k miles away from needing a clutch--but a deal on a never-titled 335d fell in my lap, so I switched out. |

I keep the car until the average monthly upkeep or major repair is more than the car is worth.
So: 1989 Nissan Pathfinder -- Sold in January this year for 1,200. Bought new. 2002 BMW x5 150k blown tranny - 6k to fix sold for 10k broken bought new 2010 m trim x5 1999 Audi A4 - wrecked not my fault. Insurance 7k - bought 2012 335is How long will I keep the Bmw's. a long time. I was once told by a very wealthy car dealer who was a good family friend that the only was to get a value on a car is: 1. Buy used and drive it till it blows up on the side of the road. 2. Buy new and still do number 1 and you will Have less maintenance the first few years I have followed numbe 2. |
