Does everyone have wastegate rattle by now?

I just installed VRSF downpipes and didn't realize how much the stock pipes were muffling the wastegate rattle. Does just about everyone with stock turbos have the rattle by now? Do you plan on just putting up with it, plan on getting new/upgraded turbos, or what? I tried the MHD fix but it made no difference.

My 07 e92, and 08 e90 both have it. My 11 e92 335is does not.

Supposedly after 2009 the wastegate rod was upgraded to a slightly beefier one so newer cars may not have it as bad. You can try to adjust the nut on the rod to reduce the rattle but I just live with it as I'm sure many others do. Look up the diy to adjust the wastegate position I think it's on this forum somewhere.

'09 e92, 98k miles and rattles like hell. Tried the MHD fix and it definitely worked, but I couldn't stand the way the car drove.

I'll just live with it until I need new turbos.

Same here. 100k on mine. It's the worst when revving it, which of course I don't normally do. I tried max setting on MHD fix and it did silence it completely even when revving, but yeah the lag is ridiculous. Here's a clip with MHD fix off. Smoke is from the crap burning off the downpipes.

You should have adjusted the WGs before the DPs went on.

If it's the rear turbo try adjusting the actuator rod. If it's the front turbo follow the instructions on page 2 of this thread.
I had severe front turbo rattle since I bought the car and this surprising 100% resolved it.

That is awesome. Do you mind explaining where the washers go exactly? Did you use 8mm washers, and did you use 2 of them on each rod?

No problem. I used standard 8mm washers found at lowes and cut a slot in them so they'd slide over the bolts. I did use 2 washers per bolt and glued them together with gorilla glue because it was too challenging to try and position them without being glued together.

There's two bolts that mount the wg actuator and the goal is to loosen the bolts and slide the washers behind the actuator to pull it away from the turbo. This accomplishes the same thing as adjusting the rid, but that isn't easily accessible for the front turbo. Once the washers are behind the actuator tighten the bolts back down and that's it. You have to feel around to locate the top bolt, the bottom one is visible by looking between the block and the water pump. I started by finding the actuator then trying to locate the mounting bolts, it's all kinda buried in there behind cooling hoses and stuff. Once you locate the bolts it's easy to understand what needs to be done.

I have an 07 335i coupe with 74k on the clock it rattles somewhat when I remove MHD Tune, but when it's flashed with any stage tune it will rattle like someone is shaking the crap out of a spray paint can and it does get annoying especially when I'm coming home at night you can definitely hear it since the whole neighborhood is a sleep lol..

I have tried removing the MHD wastegate rattle fix and checking it too and I have tried all the fix settings all the way down to 0 but no go! What gives?? I can't get used to it unfortunately it's pretty embarrassing to say the least

Also my warranty is up when I hit 90k I wonder if should attempt to get my turbos replaced? Opinions?

Great explanation, thanks! Will definitely be doing this. For everyone else's reference, here you can see the 2 bolts of the actuator he's talking about...

Thank you, I hope you give it a shot. It improved my throttle response so much it was worth it for that alone, much less getting rid of that annoying rattle. And yes, those are precisely the locations of the bolts.

Too scary to give the front adjustment a try - maybe IŽll do it soon eventually.

07 here on original TurboŽs - rattling like crap when MHD ist set anything above 5%

but the lag is so awful :-/

Just to clarify, you're talking about 8mm diameter right? What about thickness?

8mm ID washers. I just bought the standard metric flat washers from Lowes. They are about .1in thick. I'm sure any standard 8mm washer will do.
