6cylinder engine 'squeek'

Right, I've had this squeeking noise since I got my BM back in August, it's went into the dealer today to be looked at and they reckon it's a characteristic of the high pressure fuel pump...it could be but i'm not so sure.

It can be heard on startup and quite a bit louder once the car is upto full operating temp. It sounds like an on-off squeek and increases/decreases in speed with revs, although when you rev the car it goes away until you lift off and let the revs come back down (where it starts again on the way down, and at idle).

I'm wondering if anybody else has a similar noise, as it makes the car sound cheap when your sitting at the lights

One thought was the belt, I heard the older style were metal lined, another was the crank pulley as you know they have the rubber in the middle? It sounds like it's coming from that kind of area.

I'll try and get a video of it next time i'm out on a lengthy drive and get it upto temp.

on a side note, bought some black performance grills while I was there

If you have air-con, have you tried to turn it off and see if it makes any difference?

Do a search.
I read a thread on this very recently...

The concensus seemed to be HPFP noises, or noise from the fuel rails.
I thought it might be the hot gas release from the fuel tank - emmissions equipment.

335rocks, I do have aircon but it's always off when the noise occurs, I did think of this though.

m1jbr, I'll do a search I tried earlier but came up with nothing. BMW themselfs say its just a 'characteristic of the HPFP' - if so, then it's a bit of a dissappointment, but nothing I can do about it!

Belt noise is easy to test.
Spray it with WD40 whilst runningand see if it goes.
Other common culprits are bearings, either idler pullies or the alternator end bearings.

Could be, the car gets used 2-3times per week max but it gets worse as it heats up, and doesn't go away?

funnily enough, jamese93 on that thread is the old owner of my car, I knew about the fuel pipes and they have checked those again but it sounds like he's describing another noise to what i'm hearing, when I get it back tomorow i'll take a video and upload it to youtube.

Good point RE the belt! I got told it WAS the crank pulley by a bmw mech so never bothered to persue it til today when they said it's just the noise off the HPFP. will try it tho!.

Car's only done 9000miles today, would hope it's not an idler at that mileage but can't rule it out. will ask to hear another 6cyl engine tomo to confirm they all do it like the dealer sais...

cheers.
