Dealer Add Ons

Going to pick up my new LeMans Blue 335 Msport convertible this weekend. After the run through of the features and before the I finalize the financing, my CA will try to sell me on various dealer add ons such as leather treatment, fabric protector, paint and finish protection, perhaps a clear bra and and a tire warranty.

I don't think the leather or fabric protection makes any sense.

I can't believe that a brand new car needs some special paint protection treatment. However, I am not religious about washing and waxing my car. There are just too many things to do on the weekends. Normally I'll hand wash every month or so and have it detailed twice a year. Is there any reason that this less than rigorous attention to the shine would justify the cost of dealer applied paint protection?

I don't really like the look of the clear bras I notice. But perhaps they are so well done that I only notice old or poorly applied ones. Any thought on this would be welcome.

The one thing I might think about is a tire warranty. On my current car, a '99 328, I had low profile tires that came with the sport package. They looked awesome! But the streets around here are so full of potholes that three times I blew out tires. Ended up replacing one or two every time. I finally switched out all the tires to regular profile. I am told the the run flats on the car are less prone to this. What has people's experience been with tire warranties?

Lot of questions I know but any of the combined knowledge on this post would be helpful.

Can wait to drive this car!!!!!

Similar situation, going to get my car in a few days. Wanted to find out what I should get or inquire in about.

I'm most likely getting the tire insurance as I see the benefits of that, but what else?

The leather treatment, I'll pass. Clear bra is practical but I think i'll be fine without it.

The only thing I considered was the wheel package...but since I probably will be going with aftermarket ones next year, I chose not to get it. All the other stuff is crap.

Did you decide aftermarket because of the run flats?

Buy whatever add-ons you want after-market. Those dealer added accessories are nothing but pure profit for the dealer. They can sell them at any price they want, regardless of what the same things cost if purchased elsewhere. Why the heck do you think, for example, that dealer applied pinstripes cost $300-$500?

Did that cover tires and rims? I purchased the 5 year tire and wheel warranty for $899. With the 19" stlye 230 wheels, I figure if i damage 1 rim and have one tire replaced it will have payed for itself. no deductable either.

Except that per my understanding they will not replace a rim unless it doesn't hold air.. so it can get pretty nasty and still hold air. You'll find yourself wanting to do some immoral shit and bust it up further...

Thanks for the advice.

With the Run Flat Tires the tire and wheel insurance could be a close call. I guess one has to know who the insurance company is. I have heard of some warranty companies that have gone under and left the consumer holding the bag. I doubt BMW stands behind the product.

My dealer says that he is doing to suggest some paint protection. Did anybody else get this pitch from the dealer? My inclination is that my money would be better spent getting a professional detail very quickly that puts on a sealant and a good wax.

Any thoughts?

My real issue is that I want to see my car. It landed in New York July 2nd. The dealer just doesn't know where it is in the process. It took less less time to leave Germany, stop in England, stop in Halifax and unload in New York than it will have taken to get from New York to Northern Virginia. This is really getting frustrating.

Too make it even worse, I have to drive past the dealer almost every day. What do you think showed up yesterday as the featured car in front of the showroom, but an E93 Lemans Blue Msport beauty (different interior) just taunting me!!!

You're car was shipped to New York on 7/2 and you still haven't received it yet? Wow I find that hard to believe!! I don't understand why your CA doesn't know where it is since he/she should have an exact idea of when it would arrive at the dealership.

Sorry its taking so long. I know how it is. Though I was fortunate. Mine landed at the VPC in L.A. on July 6th and I picked it up on the 11th in Washington State.

Before I went in to the financing lady my C.A. told me that all the things they are going to try and sell me (extended warranty, scotchgard, clear bra, etc.)are not worth it...except the tire and wheel package.

No kidding, good advice but the odds of her being at that dealer when you buy your next new BMW aren't so good in my estimation

My advice is almost the same, except decline the tire and wheel package as well. You can buy it after the fact for considerably less money elsewhere (cough, Bimmerfest.com supporting dealers, cough).

For paint protection a coat of Meguiars NXT will work just as well as the dealer's $500 package, and it costs $15 and an hour of your time to apply it tops. Any of the other good sealants are fine also.

Good luck.

Like others have already said.. get the tire/rim warranty. I didn't and it was a huge mistake. I blew up 2 tires in first 3 months which cost me 1000 from the closest dealership. In last 2 years I have replaced 5 tires (including the above 2) that would have been covered by the warranty..

hard to argue with that... I've never busted a rim or tire other than some rash so I guess I've just lucked out lol.

I've never been inclined to get a warranty of any kind either, but looking at the OEM tires on tire rack, they are 3-500 each. 2 tires in 5 years more than pays for it.
