Be warned: the 2012 535 x-drive is not a good car, consider the A6

I thought I was buying a great car, wow was I wrong. I've owned BMWs for years and then bought the 535...I doubt I will ever by a BMW again. Here's why:

- the car drives like a Ford Taurus, big, bulky drive that doesn't seem in touch with my former BMWs

- when the motor is cold it 'chugs' along sheepishly

- the turning radius is horrid. In your average parking garage i have to do five back and forths to get out of a space

- the electronics are not reliable--the bluetooth will work, but then the reverse/distance control beeper will not--I've already hit things 3 times, total cost: $600.

--the "convenience" package is really bad. I generally have to yank on the door handle 3 times before the automatic door unlock will work. Frustrating everytime you go to your car. I tried the Audi--and it's completely different.

Anyway, the list is endless. I hate driving the car. If I have to run to the store, etc, I take my wife's E-class Mercedes. Yes, can you believe it?!?! A Mercedes is nicer to drive than a BMW. I never thought I'd say that until I got my car.

I've had it a year. It's got 5K miles on it and I'm very very tempted to sell it, take a $20K hit, because the car is SO bad. However, it does look good.

I hope this helps someone avoid the mistake I did.

My Comfort access on the door of my 2012 335is handle works first and every time. Are you putting your thumb on the right spot when you hold the handle? You have to put your thumb on those notches.

This. Unless you have managed to damage the car somehow, you won't take a huge hit. Not to mention that if you play your cards right as a private seller, you might not take as big of a hit as you might think.

Let me guess...you didn't test drive the car before you bought it? Also...you got a stripper non sports and non Msports package car rolling on 17"s and you are now complaining about the handling?

Its a big car and you dont need to get behind the wheel to notice that. If you prefer driving your wifes E class (worst car in its class according to every automotive magazine) then you aren't a BMW guy.

listen alan, i know you are going to get an f10, but this is actually becoming a typical response to people who go from hydraulic steering to electric.

some people love electric, some people bemoan the loss of steering feel and the general lack of confidence.

some people will go on and on about manual vs automatic transmissions.

Why would you buy a car, learn that you hate so much about it and then still keep it for a year? makes no sense

No park distance control on any car ive owned in the last 17 years never backed into anything.. You still have mirrors? I get it you dont like the car but why keep it?
Really sounds like you bought this car without doing your homework / test drive and compare to other comparable cars.. No other way to explain some of your complaints..

My dealer has helped me with any minor or major issues if your car is new and you have valid electronics issues show to dealer they should fix them.

All the money in the world cant fix common sense when car buying...

you're right... if you're getting detached steering with the 535, the A6 is definitely going to be a better all-round "detached" car. I'd buy one with the S-Line package. It looks a lot better than the 5er in my books!

Trust me I know. There are guys that do nothing but complain about there F10s and there at those that have zero issues with them. What bugs me is when someone buys a 528 and then bitches the car is too slow or gets a non-sports package/Msports car and then go complain about the handling. Want handling? Get the dynamic handling package then... If people are expecting it to feel and handle like a 3 series then forget about it...go get a 3 instead.

Darn it, I did not know that banging my car into other cars and trees is also covered by warranty. The best warranty ever!

Even google translator got confused...

Anyway, just before moving back from Europe, I got a loaner 520d for a day. It had a sport package. The car was nice. A totally different vehicle from the 3, and intended that way. It handled nicely for the vehicle it is supposed to be -- comfortable, yet capable. The steering wheel response was OK for the 5er, I don't think I would like it much on my 3er...

agreed.

but lets be fair, the 5 is now pretending to be a "right size"-7series instead of being a bigger 3 series.

i mean, steering feel is dead almost universally coming forward, so imho, the 5series has struck one of the better compromises and should be applauded.

i also won't run with the idea that the 5 is a worse drive than a e350, thats just not making any sense.

ps op has a 535xi not a 528, should be held in for context.
