2009 HDD based NAV Audio Input Options!

Ladies, Gents,

Supposing I WAS to buy a 2009 (pre LCI) Coupe with the HDD based nav, what options would I have for playing music etc?

I believe the theoretical car in question has a USB input in the glovebox and an aux input in the armrest, which leads me to believe I can transfer music from a flash usb card onto the HDD via the glovebox (or via an MP3 DVD/CD) which I can playback via the dash.

I could also use the aux input (which I obviously never will because I couldn't control skipping etc via the car.)

So, here is my question in a nutshell - is it possible to retrofit the USB/AUX combo in the armrest in a car which has this configuration? If so, what I am looking at in parts and the inevitable coding which I will assume only BMW can do?

IF there is a positive answer to the above, has anything moved on in respect of retrofitting DAB - can it be done easily? I could do the wiring and fit the DAB aerial and module, but the coding I obviously couldn't do.

Finally, am I correct in assuming that the HDD is likely to be approx 12.5 gb?

Thanks
Matt

Your assumptions on all the above are correct, but I don't know how much it would cost to add the armrest "controllable streaming" USB.

The USB in the glovebox is only for uploading, you can't stream to it.

Thanks mate, good to know that at least that much is accurate!

The path to illumination is, erm, illumination

It's the "6FL" option, as you probably know.

I have been confused by the 6FL's and similar many times mate so again, thanks for mentioning it - I didn't know that it was 6FL for 100% certain. Again I just want to discuss it so I can be 100% in the know before I embark upon any missions.

I've found this thread:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...t=usb+retrofit

About half way down, someone posts a link to another thread which is quite informative on the subject and a PDF (which is a BMW document with clear instructions - I'll try to attach) and seems positive in it's response.

I wonder if this is something I can get Anneka to comment/quote on so we have a definitive answer?

Mate I just stuck a bunch of MP3s on a dual layer DVD (8.5 gig) and got the beem to convert it to hard disk. Simple as.

You can also attach a portable drive in the glovebox and use the import/export function but the DVD seemed easier at the time.

Garage List
On the newer CIC the DAB is built into the unit and not a separate unit.
So to retrofit DAB you would need a new CIC unit.

Thanks chaps, good advice so far.

Dave is yours 12.5gb too? That's nowhere near enough for me, to be honest! With a single layer DVD in too... About 50% of what I'd ideally want.

Agreed. 12 gig is very restrictive. I find myself making 2-3 discs a week depending on tastes at the mo to supplement. I have 80 gig of music on this machine!

But. I've got an old 80 gig iPod which will be permenantly attached in the glovebox - just need to wipe it and get it all set up again nicely..

Well that's kinda what this thread is all about mate... I need to have a proper USB/aux 6FL kit fitted!
