Red Diesel vs White Diesel

I had a really interesting conversation with a guy in the week about the difference between the two. I said I thought it was not as good or dirtier but was guessing, He said it must be ok as they use it in £500k D8 Caterpillar dozers etc ten times the price off a Discovery or X5 , I cant argue with that so what is the difference just some red dye and less duty or is it completly different .

Or would a D8 Caterpillar not like white diesel

As far as I am aware it is the same!

We run it occasionally in our site truck(legally as it isn't for the road)!

Also in many other items that require it but when we don't get a delivery of red for a while we use white too!!

Same stuff just dyed so it can be identified as lower duty stuff and not for road use.

Red diesel is just low duty, no different to white other than the dye. But Industrial/farm machinery will generally run on lower quality fuels than high performance cars.

They ship worldwide and must continue to work. You can't get good diesel in India, Africa or China. My tdi defender will run on straight veg oil, try that in a modern diesel and you'll have no end of trouble.

It's just dyed, no chemical changes.

Regarding defender being able to run on low quality fuel that modern engines won't, don't be so sure. Low quality fuel testing is an expensive business (strange given you'd think lower quality would mean cheap to acquire) carried out by any OEM worth their salt if they want to avoid warranty claims in the emerging markets.

Not quite the same, since Jan 2011 red diesel has contained around 7% Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME)

See link below

Wouldn't risk it in your expensive motor!

Thank you Will,

I couldn't disagree with the guy when he said come on mate if it was different do you honestly think these big plant contractors would put it in and the example we was actually talking about was a 500hp Mercedes V8 Diesel fitted to a Bell 50 dump truck there was 3 brand new trucks at I think he said cost 300k each

It wasn't a argument as such just differing opinions ,The comment was along the lines above I wouldn't put it in a car not knowing and he said ,Come on buddy if it can be used in Caterpillar and Mercedes ,Liebherr kit that cost 10 times what you would pay for a car do you think it is inferior , I said I didn't know but know I do know a little more can argue the toss next time.

Scooba, get the fella to spend 40 grand on a new 330d. Run it exclusively on red diesel for 20000 miles and then report back to us.

I bet you a tenner now that the money he saved in duty is a fraction of the cost of repairs to his engine......

I always find that come the winter months red diesel tends to freeze up a bit compared to white. Think white has anti freezing additives where as red doesn't. We always tend to put a bit of white in our moffet fork trucks during the winter months as the filters and fuel lines tend to freeze up.

That's ridiculous. 8 vehicles for 18 months (assumed from post) and he gets a 4k fine. He's not even nearly out of pocket.
