Exclamation Castrol Edge SPT 5W-40

Was at my local Advance Auto Parts and came across Castrol Edge SPT 5W40, it says BMW LL01 approved and was thinking about getting some. My car has 60K on it now. Currently I'm running Mobil 0W40 but have been burning it. Has anyone used this before?

I think they change the name not to long ago. I used this the last time I changed my oil because it was the only one they had for our cars and it has the rating

Castrol is generally thicker than Mobil One at the same rating. However, in my country 5w-40 is advertised for diesel models only. Not sure why. I would use 0w-40, looks better on all counts for a winter oil.

I use this oil in summer since it's thicker and our engines run very hot.

If you can get your hands on some Valvoline SuperSynth 5W-40, which is BMW LL-01 approved, get it! In my previous car (VW), I did somewhat extensive oil testing over period of 4 years and 9 oil changes. Mobil1 0W-40 was performing very poorly.

The Valvoline 5W-40 had the highest TBN number of any motor oil that I've seen being approved for our cars.

BTW, the VW approved oils are also get the BMW LL-01 approval stamp also.

By the way, SPT means Syntec Power Technology. This is Castrol's mainstream oil, a step below the real Castrol Edge:

could be... i worked at a major bulk distributor back in the day and been using them ever since.. just a personal preference. I dont think id run such a "thin" blend for extended periods. But i change it every 2500 miles and works great for me.

i just use german castrol 0w30 and couldn't be happier. I would try the 5w40 next time though if it's better for our warmer temps in FL

It's usually on sale at autozone or advanced autoparts for $32.99 5/qts w/ an oil filter.

my car has 60k and some say the 5W40 is better to withstand the HTHS...
