So much for security cameras, lol.
If that key coder is legit, we should be seriously worried. Scary!

From the looks if it, it runs off a battery current in the car. Not like the cigarette/12v outlet that requires the key be in the ignition & the auxiliary power be on |

I wonder if there could be a setting on a piggyback (hint: vishnu) that would block certain commands that could be received/used to start the car.

How many seconds does it take to unlock it ? 2 or 3 ?
My car did suffer a theft attempt, but fortunately they weren't able to start it. I hope it's not so easy to do it ! I did have the OEM alarm. I was thinking about interrupting the 2-3 most important wires to the OBD port via a hidden switch. Could be more effective than many other solutions.

Wouldn't a piggyback on an active map serve the same purpose? You can't read off the OBD port with a JB4 or Procede installed thus this device would be rendered inoperable unless the thieves knew how these piggybacks worked.

For some level of protection, go to your local stealership and see if they would agree to update your ECU and CAS firmwares. BMW apparently released a new version in 2011 that removes access to the memory used by the device to generate the new key via OBD. Not sure if you can still do it via the ICOM interface. This won't protect you against the thief pulling the CAS module and reading the data directly from the chip but it takes longer. |
