Ahhh - Love handles

So in the last year I've dropped over 35 pounds (now 5'11", 195lbs, big frame) and I lift a couple of times a week. I lost the weight by eating healthier and the only cardio I do is walking the dogs and the occasional hike. It's moreso a life style change and I'm not a gym rat nor am I big into wanting to 'get ripped'.

My body has pretty much completely changed and is still changing for the better but what I can't get rid of are my sides. I work them damn near everyday but they aren't going anywhere so I must be doing the wrong exercise.

Anyone have any tips to get rid of these SOB's before summer hits that I can do at home?

First off, congrats on the weight loss!
As for your Q:

- Nutrition.

No such thing as localized fat loss. Try tweaking your nutrition some more, and see how your body responds to it. Also add short-bursts of high-intensity running to your routine (8x100m sprints, 30s rest in between for example). Change things up. Try bodyweight resistance exercises as well. Lift something real heavy 1-2x a week (Squat/Deadlift).

Good luck!

yep, no localized fat loss, and for guys the mid section is always the last to to go. a calorie deficit with hiit in conjunction with your lifting routine and healthy diet should do the trick. it's key to track calories, knowing what your maintenance calories are (to maintain current weight) and reducing your intake by 300-500 calories will allow you to drop a pound a week. it's important to keep lifting though, so you don't lose muscle along the way.

Bummer! Lipo it is! (kidding)

I do a supplement shake for breakfast and another for lunch plus some multivitamins and what not and then eat a healthy dinner. I'm low on calorie intake, still losing weight, and still lifting (benching 250+) so the weight is still coming off but it just seems like I still have the sides of a 240 pounder lol.

So from what you guys are saying - I just need to introduce more cardio into my routine (grrr hate cardio)

Since your main goal is body composition kill those shakes. Liquid food promotes a much greater insulin spike whereas whole foods are digested over a longer period of time, keeping insulin levels down and providing consistent energy throughout.

Insulin = Storage hormone.

Yup, you're going to have to get lean to kill off that last bit of fat. And that is going to take some hard work, but you're already used to that considering how much you have lost! Like the other guys have mentioned, diet is going to play a lot into getting to that last goal.

Not sure what your body fat percentage is, but I'm 6' and didn't lose my love handles entirely until I hit 185. Now it's different, though. I've got much more muscle mass on me and I'm about 190 without any sort of fat around my hips.

The thought has crossed my mind - haha!

Thanks for the information fellas. I'm going to stay on the shakes for a while longer as it just fits my life style better right now (always forget to eat breakfast and sometimes lunch) and it's working. Going to shoot for another 15 pounds before I go back to solids.

More of the same + more cardio it is! DIE SIDES!

Just dont do some of those dumbass side bends holding dumbbells trying to slim them up. I want to slap anyone I see doing them because all they do is build that area up and make them look even thicker. Definitely will NOT give you the tapered V look

the trick to losing fat is to find the point at which your body switches from burning fat to glucose. Dont pass that point.

Further life-style changes in your near future. You need to eat the most food in the a.m. when you can burn it off while active during the rest of the day. A large portion of calories you eat at dinner go right to your belly while you are asleep.

Pills do not help you lose weight - a caloric deficit does.

OP you need to lower your cals and continue to lift heavy. Bang. Simple.

No fucking P90 shit will magically give you abs; a lower BF% does.

boo to supplements all natural. takes time but it pays off. When I was deployed I use to lift with guys that were on those shakes and pills and they would burn out after an hour. granted they got bigger than me alot quicker but they couldn't use it. After we came back they all got slim agan.

Love handles = blood sugar dysregulation. Nutritional modification and lifestyle management to correct. Your current strategy won't work. You can modify certain fat sites using nutritional and lifestyle modification as certain sites are related to certain hormones.

Lots of bad advice here.

You can't spot reduce. Even knowing your bodyfat% would only help so much because our individual genetics are so varied from person to person. One person will look ripped at 14% BF while another will look soft at 10%.

Pills and supplements are mostly expensive toilet fillers.

You can certainly improve on your nutrition, if only the timing and portion size. You should aim for 5-6 small meals throughout the day. Skipping breakfast is a bad idea. And drink plenty of water throughout the day.

You also didn't mention your age. As we get older our hormone status declines and that manifests itself as a soft middle in men. You can go the expensive route of lots of bloodwork and hormone supplementation to get your hormone levels back to a 21 year old status which may or may not assist. Or you can get lipo as you mentioned, which involves surgery and downtime.

Best course is to do your best with nutrition, cardio and weight training as it fits your lifestyle and get the best body you can. Then be happy with it.
