Turbo oil lines

I've noticed a small amount of oil coming from the oil supply lines on the turbos.....

Is this typical with higher boost levels or a symptom of something more serious?

Planning to replace the lines, just wanted a little feedback from the group.

The oil line on top (horseshoe shaped) is known to seep. I had mine replaced at about 75 k miles. I did not replace the others.

Garage List
They seep on my x5d with 138k miles and my 335d with 65k miles. Pretty common for most of us.I will not be replacing them until it becomes more than a seep. I will probably separate the turbos and do all 3 at that time. I do not believe the crimps from the hoses to the fittings had the most robust design from the factory. The hoses them selves are ok. Boost should not effect them

Hope you do not have to replace the #1 from the block to the dist box.

Very common failure. Mine was replaced (on my 335d) at 74146 miles.

Just replaced mine. Not too hard to do.

Here is the thread on it: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1327434

Crap. I smelled some nastiness in my car earlier this morning and am not sure if it was my own car I was smelling or the nasty Tahoe in front of me. I guess I'll have to check later.

This.

I replaced all my oil lines recently due to being in there for a different project, and had easy access to all of them. However, I did wonder how one would go about replacing this line without removing all the other stuff ... Is there an alternate way to gain access to this connection at the block without having to remove all the turbo's and exhaust manifold?

So.....this morning I noticed some white smoke under normal throttle. I will now make this a priority to get the issue sorted ASAP.

There is a return line that also appears to necessitate removal of the turbos in order to replace the gasket on it at the turbo. My gasket is leaking, I investigated and *maybe* tightened one of the two bolts but ultimately decided since it was the return line it wasnt worth my effort to repair unless I need to pull the turbos for something else. Why manufacturers choose to put gasketed fittings in an essentially inaccessible location is beyond me.

I had to do this my early days of my D ownership. Not to say this is the correct way, but it did work for me and was a real pita. Here is what I did.
-remove a/c belt
-unbolt a/c compressor
-unbolt a/c bracket
-remove airbox
-remove vacuum accumulator box and some associated vacuum connections
-remove turbo heatshields
-remove the 5 bolts holding the turbos, but not the turbos

All of that gave me enough space to undo the bottom banjo bolt. It almost was enough space to do without unbolting the turbos, but needed extra 5mm as the bolt was hitting the turbine housing of the LP turbo, so that needed to move a tad. This was a while and I may have some faded memories and curse words when I did this. Truly do not wish this for anyone to do unless you are removing the turbos for other purposes, but if you do, replace the #1 turbo oil feed line anyway, just so you do not have to do it in the future.

PS: TDIwyze, I am curious about your "other" project. I bet it is something to do with what those scandinavians could do to the hot side of that LP....

Thanks for that description. It is the crazy kind of procedure I feared it would be...
