Steering Wheel Lock Malfunction!

Hello Guys,

I was driving my car around my local area and I stopped to grab a bag of chips from a convenience store. When I returned to my car, I inserted the FOB and was presented with the red steering wheel with the lock above it after trying to start the car. My car is currently sitting outside of a convenience store and will not even attempt to turn over. Have you guys had this problem before? Any Advice?

Vehicle Information:

2007 BMW 335i 6MT
86000kms
Just had a full inspection done on Tuesday last week. Along with other service like break fluid, Seals around the oil cooler line, transmission fluid, and micro-filter. Also I had the entire vehicle repainted in the last month.

Other Info

When I try to start the car other warnings were appearing. The car will no longer even attempt to start.

I tried the following methods to fix this problem:
- Tried shaking the steering wheel while in rolling back in reverse.
- Tried boosting the battery and trying to start it.
- Called my nearest dealer (2.5h away) who told me to apply the break as far as it can go and try starting it. Tried doing this and was unsuccessful.

After calling BMW back, the service techs were gone. I am out of ideas and any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Matthew

I had this happen with my 330xi e90.... Turning the wheel from side to
side typically resolved it... Good luck !

Try to pull the steering slightly to on side or the other and remove the key fob while holding it, then insert again, try to start again, repeat as needed

Unfortunately seems like you have the same issue as I had some time ago, which is a bit too common on the 06 and 07 models

Hi Guys,
I have the same problem with my '07 328i Coupe - Red symbol steering lock code on dash. Happened a day after the battery was reconnected to the car (bodywork done for 2 weeks sitting). The battery for sure is weak and on it's last leg.

Havent gone anywhere yet to check it out....but basically, I'm guessing I'm at the dealers mercy in whether they diagnose either:
1. A new column $1,400+?
2. A new batttery and software reset $500+ ?
3. Both above $2k + ??

Damnit. Been driving with the red symbol for the past 3 weeks with my fingers crossed.

Any advise apart from start saving the $2k?

My resolve was replacing the battery for 300 including coding since I knowing had a weak battery foe quite awhile. I have CAA so the tow was free. Good luck.
