Cool Car&Driver 2011 Lightning Lap @ VIR results are in for M3, 335i, Z4, 135i

From http://www.caranddriver.com/features...p_2011-feature (Full feature, with test lap videos)

Below is the overall list of the track time on VIR race track. This is for all the past and present contenders. The rank, lap time, model name, price class and date of testing are all listed in the order from left to right. I highlighted all the BMW models in blue....lol

For this year test I have to say the Lexus IS-F shocked me ... by matching the M3 times and actually beating out the 5.0 liter Mustang. All of this despite having almost the same power and more weight then the Mustang and M3.

I think this test also to some extent sheds the light on the discussion. That can a regular M3 with no competition package keep up or exceed the performance of a new 412hp Mustang 5.0 liter on track.

OK no surprise here in CTS-V coupe beating out the C63 AMG or Jag XFR. I have personally driven the CTS-V on MSR race track and it has awesome brakes and that engine is a monster.

Also, finally the Mustang GT500 redeemed itself after last few years of disappointing runs. I still think that it should do a bit better with all that power. It reminds me of how M6 was disappointing on this track despite all the power due to excessive weight.

On the other hand the new Z06 with Z7 package went from being really great to near super car level like it bigger brother ZR1. Each year the Chevy really improve on the already good Z06 version to even make it better. Only if they also spent the same effort on its interior design updates so that it could match its performance updates. Then it would be like heaven on earth. None the less great performance machine without a doubt.

Last but not least since this is the E90/E92 board. No matter what any body says I am still impressed with the 335i coupes lap times with no LSD and all from back when it was tested.

The E92 335i times not only beat the G37 coupe sport, Nissmo 370 and previous Lexus IS-F. But are also better then those of the newer, lighter, AWD S4 as well as S5 and last generation RS4.

Even when compared to the in house M division cars its lap times are better then the Z4M and nearly match those of the mighty 507 hp M6 coupe. To me this car is a bargain performance machine. I am so glad its parked in your humbles garage.

One can only imagine how much better it would be with a slightly tuned engine, DCT like tranny and proper LSD.

OK now for my gripe from this years lightning test. Why no love for BMW's. Where is the test of Z435is, 335is or M3 competition package.

Any how I hope we can soon get the above mentioned cars on the VIR lightning lap to compare them in addition to the upcoming 1M.....are you listening C&D.

No AWD BMW versions in here? Just to fuel the AWD RWD debate I'd like to see some dry road performance figures.

I agree it would be nice to see a AWD BMW in there also just for comparison against the likes of Audi S4 or S5 etc.

Yeah, seems like the IS-F updates brought it right neck and neck with the M3.

Though, I am not a fan of the IS-F especially the 8 speed auto, but looks like Lexus overall is on a roll. Their absolutely stunning first supercar LFA's 4.8 Liter V10 beat the Ferrari 4.5 Liter V8, GTR V6, LP570-4 & R8 V10, SLS AMG V8, GT3 & GT2 RS flat-6 etc. for "Evo UK best engine of the year".

There has been nothing that has felt this special since the Macca F1, says Chris Harris
Quote:

There is nothing in the world like the Lexus LFA. It is more special and intriguing than the 458 and demonstrates an extraordinary level of passion and commitment. Bespoke and limited edition, it is also a genuine supercar that can scare the pants off you. This is mainly thanks to it's extraordinary 552bhp 4.8-litre V10 that does everything a Carrera GT's does and then goes completely mad as it closes in on 9500rpm. Its uncompromising ride adds to the challenge, and it was generally agreed that it would have been a bit of a handful up on the moors,
but we were beguiled. "It's a beautiful thing, all the details, and it has the integrity and functionality of a Lexus. Feels like a step up from everything else here," said Meaden. "Very, very special," said Metcalfe. Thank you, Lexus.

What was wrong with the 135 when it ran? Kinda hard to believe it got beat by a V6 Mustang, especially when the 335 is so much further ahead of it. Honestly though, that makes me chuckle.

I really like the '11 GT500 with the SVTPP. And the 5.0 doesn't handle too bad either, does it?

Without sports suspension and the added weight, it will not be good on the results for the BMW. They chose performance oriented cars in each price range and an XI, sorry to say, is not going to make that list.

Yes the 335i coupe edged the S4 sedan by 3/10th's on the same track, but I can use your argument that it was not on the same day or same driver. Given that the S4 was tested on a cold February day compared to 335's in August

I'm surprised that the 135 finished 3 seconds behind the regular 335i. You would think that with the same power and lighter / smaller chassis it would do at least the same or best it.
complete BS.

Why compare laps from different days, even years? There is different conditions, which equals skewed results.

I have to say, I'm surprised by the 135i's performance...? It seems inconsistent that the 335i would be that far ahead, if any. The results are very weird to me not just on the BMW's but on alot of others too. Especially the cayman S and the 997 Turbo running the same time?

I'd take caution directly comparing results from year to year. Some of their times are very suspect also and while I am not suggesting foul play, they go against all other results for the cars.

journalists like autozeitung, kilometer magazine (who btw said it has a stiffer suspension than the Audi S4) and auto motor sport have indeed compared the 335xi to the s4. the 335xi also holds better laptimes than the 335i on the autozeitung test track.

look, I'm not saying xdrive is better than rwd i, or quattro... but for crying out loud if people would stop spreading BS about it being for "foul weather only" as if the bmw designers purposefully made it handle like a jeep wrangler - itis a bit much. It's a turbo awd sports sedan. It's not weird to compare it to another one. It may be slower but it's still worthy of comparison... even to see how much "slower" it is at driving levels each and every one of us on this thread are not close to capable of.

Isn't cold February weather better for forced induction cars than say a hot day in August?
