135i vs. s4

So I've had my heart set on the 135i for a while now due to its tuning potential, 4 seats, descent looks (IMO),...did I mention tunability.

Over the months I have considered many other cars, they have come and gone (new STi, MS3, volvo c30, e46 m3, A3 etc. etc.)

About the only car that has maintained a small competetive place in my mind has been the B7 s4. A bit more practical, spot on pricewise with a used 135i...the only downside is it will be down on power (after a comprable amount of money spent tuning) what do you guys think?

I was going to buy the B7 S4 Before my 335i, I still belive that is one of the sexiest looking sedans out there, it was fun had AWD, sounded great and it was fast, Only downside is Audi isnt soo reliable you cant get much more power out of the engine, and it doesnt have that FUN sports car feeling you will get int the 135 335i.. But you cant go wrong either way

The S4 will defeinitely be more practical as the 135 is a smaller vehicle. AWD is nice if you are in a climate that gets snow and rain.

Both would be great to drive.

It might be easier to lure chicks with the S4, but it won't be as fast.

Well I live in arizona, so I don't need the quattro at all...would actually prefer a rear wheel drive car a bit. Also, it's just my wife and I (and will be for some time) so I don't need the 4 doors or extra space.

As far as modding goes, the s4 starts out with about 30 more HP (albeit more weight too) and I could probably squeeze another 35-45 out of it for the same price I could gain 100 hp out of the 135i.

I try to come up with good competitors for the 135i...just can't seem to find any. But theres something about a big audi v8 that tugs a bit at my heart....

Why not wait for the new S4? It will look sexier can be just as fast and mod friendly as a 135i.

coming from the audi family i know a little bit about what's going on on the other side of the fence. audis are extremely good(not always reliable depending on the chassis you choose) all around cars. As far as handling is concerned the engine is basically mounted as far in the front of every modern audi as humanly possible. thus you're going to notice a ton of push in extreme conditions and the steering can often leave you feeling a little bit detached from the car. However, for general road handling and stability it feel amazing and confident. all wheel drive as super in less than ideal conditions and the amount of grip through turns is flat out retarded. Having said that i do have some complaints...the v8 is a complete pig in every way shape and form. They have had the least problems out of the most modern S4 chassis(b5/6/7...8 is still up in the air since audi has never done a supercharger before) as its...just a v8. its probably the worst on gas compared to its siblings and the weight from the v8(just a guess) would probably make it handle even worse than the models before and after it. I will say that they are some of the nicer looking s4's though.

Test drive them both. I think you'll find the S4 feels a lot tamer in comparison. It's practical versus fun basically.

The B7 S4 is an OK car, it grips, is reasonably quick but it's engine doesn't have much scope for cheap tuning like you have with the 35i engined cars. It's main advantages over the 135i is the engine note (can't beat a V8), it's way more practical and it's got AWD to cope with any weather condition that threw at you. But it's not the best S Audi on sale or even secondhand, the S3 2.0TFSI is a more entertaining drive and feels a lot lighter on it's feet, it's just as quick (almost) and can be tuned to 330hp reasonably cheaply.

But if you can afford it and have your heart set on an Audi then buy the new B8 S4 because it's the best S model Audi ever and when combined with the trick diff it's will easily see off the 135i/335i on the track plus even in stock form is quicker in acceleration than both of them. It's not a cheap car but this time round it's worth every penny extra.

I'd love to, but I'm trying to be a bit reasonable with my cars and stay in the low 30k range optioned out.

Thanks for all the opinions guys, I consistently keep coming back to the 135i as the car I want to have, so maybe I should just wait for the right deal to come around and jump on it.

I was about to buy an S4. In fact I left a deposit on the car. I changed my mind for a few reasons:
-I didnt want to redo BBK(Like I did on my a4)
-2nd CPO vs new
-3rd Audi resale value I took a bath with my A4
My next car is probably an RS4
But honestly the Audi is still good, just needs a few tweaks here and there IMO the 06's looks better they come with BBS from the factory.
The v8 sounds beastly. Nobody expects an A4 look alike to sound like a muscle car. It adds to the coolness factor.

Z4 M? It's an NA engine so probably not so tunable... but surely a very fun car. 330 HP, 3200 lbs

Also, what about the 370Z?
used Porsche Cayman? 2900 lbs, 245 HP (2007) (Probably not an "S" version with your budget.)
used Boxter S? 2950 lbs, 280 HP (2006) 3000 lbs, 295 HP (2007)

You come up with some very valid options there, and I definitely have considered most of them....the biggest problem. I need 4 seats. Although it's just my wife and I there are still times when I need to lug around my friends.

Right now the most logical is the 135i, or possible an A3 that would receive extensive mod's. But the 135i still stands out as the winner, just have to wait for the prices to drop a bit more I think!

I sold my A3 for a 135. The A3 was boring compared to the 135.

Stick with the 135i or possibly look at the new VW Scirocco which can seat 4 just as well as the 135i and can be tuned to 330hp quite easily, plus has a look to die for (especially in the metallic green).

It definitely has the 135i licked on looks

Well RH, what's you opinion on the looks of the 135i Coupe, do you think it matches up to the standard of the Scirocco?

Frankly it's one of the best looking car to be released in the pass 18 months.

I've seen the Scirocco just once irl, and it looked nice imo. The 135i is somewhat different in it's design and I prefer the hatchback(130i), but I can't say it's ugly, not at all. The Scirocco has a better stance and looks more agressive, but the 130i/135i are the better cars to drive for ME, more spirited, but that's my rwd bias I know.

300BHP @ the front wheels is still a bit difficult(understatement)

the s4 looks like a ford taurus, the lines are all wrong, people actually think those are sexy?

in other words, it looks like every other generic sedan, there's probably a billion of them on our roads
