Oil temps
I drove my e90 n54 with an oil cooler, that I bought, back from Canada over the last day. Running DCI, catless DP and jb4 on tune 5 (auto tune). Cruising at 80 mph with 45-70 F ambient temps I was seeing oil temps of 240-250. I was a little surprised it it was this high. Is this normal? Seems like it is, but will temps hold there if I push it? It has the stock charge pipe so I didn’t want to push it until I replace it.

That little too hot for crushing. Oil cooler thermostat opens at around 110c/230f and temperatures should be in that range. Why not push it because of the charge pipe?

The n54 is well known to run pretty hot, significantly more so than most people are used to. One of the biggest benefits of MHD tunes is allowing you to change when the cooling system kicks in and what temps it targets, which afaik you don't get with JB4 or anything else.
With my current tune and commute I hardly see it hit much more than 220 unless it's pretty hot out (80°F+) and I'm not steadily moving, but with the stock tune and if you were running at 80mph in 70° weather for a while I don't think that's too absurd honestly. Double check that your oil level is right and maybe do an oil + filter change when you get a chance so you know everything is right, but I'd definitely recommend an MHD flash if you're gonna be beating on it and/or prefer the lower temps. |
